I guess someone like Bilko could write a book on the rise and fall of the gulch. There are plenty of reasons for it's demise. Probably some of us, myself included, may be a little unrealistic about the gulch coming back to anything close to what it used to be. Probably wont happen anytime soon if at all.

BD, I have never really been an MP guy as I like to party in my room so I can comment on the talent there. The last time I was in an MP is when BK was still around and that was few years ago.

That's the beauty of CR. We can all do it our own way.

Of course, if you are looking to pay $70 or less, you can forget about top shelf at Cocal in the evenings...just stick to gorditas in MPs in San Jose.

Ban, I always enjoy reading your posts and hearing your opinions, though I rarely agree with them.

"Gorditas" in MPs ??? I'd expect this sort of comment from a know-nothing newbie, and not a gulch vet. I know yer being flippant, but honestly, I spend more money in MPs each day than I do on the nightly indie from SL/HDR, and I do not have any interest in "Gorditas".

I suggest you find new MPs to visit. That will change your PoV on the quality ratio between the salas and the indie pick-up joints. (And you might be surprised how many nightly HDR girls you see working in some of those salas.)

I was being flippant and ironic so to speak, BD...I know there are some flaquitas at MPs too
My general point was, that unlike before in the good old days, the top shelf bar chicas no longer can be found in the gulch. It is Cocal or bust these days. And I know there are rare exceptions, but again I mean in general. If you want a scene circa HDR 2004-2006, Cocal is the only option.

Maybe we can agree on that one bud :D

Why do we always bring up the past it will never be the same. I remember 2000=2006 so it is not coming back so make the best of it. last week KL was so so but the DR had plently of talent till 3:00 . So just go with the flow and forget about the past.

Regarding Halloween at the KL, if it's anything like it was several years ago, it will be packed. Two or three years ago I was sitting at the 'front' bar, where the pool table used to be (followed later by the DJ), and you could hardly move in the place. Around midnight they set off a ton of dry ice. For the next 15 minutes, the fog was so thick that you couldn't see more than eight or so inches in front of your face. I could barely see the chica sitting next to me. Talk about over-doing it

A lot of you are speaking of Key Largo being on a boom in the early to mid 2000.

Let me inform you that the good old days for KL were the late 1970's and 1980's. It was the place to be while the DR was soon to become a small fishing bar. The chicas back then wore nice dresses and would sit on chairs along the wall and would not approach the men at the bar unless invited. They were polite and mostly only the classy ones frequented the KL. For 10 to 20$ you could get a lovely chica for a whole night. If you took them to dinner or a movie....you were in like flint for another night free.

A friend took me to this bar in the late 1970"s and I was a happy man who thought I was in the land of OZ. Wow....those were the days.

One time I got really drunk and the bartender escorted me up stairs to a room where there was a couch. I passed out and did not wake up until the early next morning. A cleaning lady came into the room and screamed because I was only in my under ware. I made it out before the police got there.

Fond memories.

Good story. Wouldn't it be cool to step into a time machine and go back to those days.

Circus...when was the Park Hotel at its peak? From the late 80s to early 90s?

I also visited KL in 1979, and in the early and mid 80s. Back then, the HDR building was the annex to the Hotel Costa Rica, for longer stay guests. There was no public access to that building and no bar there.

KL back then was a fun period bar owned by three American expats, one of them a fellow last named Carter, if my memory is correct. Although it was nothing like the current reincarnation of the place (it was only the original Parque Morazan mansion, not including the adjacent Del Mar restaurant house or the back parking lot building, where the outdoor bar is now), there was a nice selection of chicas, at night.

However, and this is my main point, they were never available for $10 or $20, nor the then equivalent in colones. Typical asking range was $50 to 100...with plenty of room for negotiating, and in most cases a true GFE for those gringos with game!

Oh, and they were local chicas, not from all over the region!

Yo bandon:

I don't know where you were going in 1979 but a chica asking $100 would have starved. That price you mention is more like in the last 7 to 8 years. 1980 a $100. amount would be equal to around $300. today. It's true that the 9 and 10 top rated chicas would go for at least $30 or more and not for all night. CR was not the capital of prostitution in the 1970's and early 80's as it has currently been for the last 12 or more years. You are right about one thing...the working girls were probably around 90 to 95% from Costa Rica back then...before CR was invaded by women from other countries.

I never got a chica for $10. but I did for $20 and change unless it was a BBJ...and enjoyed their company all night. She may have been a 6 or 7 rated but old Circus was a real slut back then. And BTW. in the late 70's you could play blackjack at the Hotel Gran for just 25 to 50 cents a hand. Just about every block there in what we call the gulch had a bar with a blackjack table....a lot of competition.

I must say I have fond memories of the Park Hotel. I even have fond memories of the DR before it changed so much. Try to picture it with girls with no high heels and no fake tits. I remember the New Fantasy being my favorite mp. I never remember $100.00 chicas in those days. I do remember a less professional atmosphere. Time marches on! One of the fondest memories I have is of an MP close to the entrance of Barrio Chino which is now long gone. I can't remember the name, but they had a very small sauna with real eucalyptus branches on the floor. Boy did that clear the sinuses!

Couple of old guys trying to remember how things were a long time ago….

Back in 1979 the colon to US$ exchange rate was around 10 colones for $1. So I can tell you, my best recollection is, unless you were hanging out in Calle 12, around the old Cine Libano (the equivalent of Calle 6 pensiones today), the upper chicas in the gringo bars were not going for 100 to 200 colones a pop. More like 500+ or so, bud!

First trip to CR in Sept. 2001 the exchange rate was 375 colones to 1 dollar. The Key Largo was not owned by HDR yet and you had to enter over at the original entrance. In 2001 the Monkey Bar(across the street from BM entrance) was packed every night and also the HDR was full by 8pm. When HDR mgmt took over Key Largo, they had a cheap buffett(chicken or pork with beans & rice) about 3.50 a plate and it brought in a lot of people.

As I remember it in 2000 girls at the DR would go for $40 to $50 an hour but I remember some asking for cien too.
The popular MP near the Chinatown gate was called Arte Saune and charged $20/hour. A year or two later New Fantasy opened and they went out of business. Zona Blue opened about 2003 or 4 and became wildly popular.
