I made two trips to Jaco today and no problems at all with the strike/protest although I did see them passing by the airport a bit after noon. A good way to keep up on protests, accidents and closures is on this Facebook page:

A tag line in an IRC News article said

"SJO airport operating on reserve jet fuel as a result of strikes; asks some airlines to have enough fuel for return trip"

The article said they estimate enough fuel for a week. It later said the unions are also refusing delivery to gas stations which could lead to shortages of fuel for motorists.

Hopefully things get resolved, or at least temporary agreements made so business can continue.

Another STRIKE, EVEN LARGER than the last one (last Friday) is planned for this coming Monday, a day that a lot of guys will be arriving for Halloween week. This one involves the 5 major unions including many public workers. Major difference is this is not planned as a one day strike as is normal here but leaders are saying it will last till they get positive results out of president Solis.

For those coming in Monday I would suggest you plan on it taking as much as 4 hours to get to your hotel. Hopefully most of the taxistas will have enough sense to take the back roads north of San Jose thou even that will be very heavy traffic. Last Friday I was in downtown with my landlady. We mistakenly thought we could beat the marching protesters! Took us 4 hours to get to the northeast side of San Pedro ( about 5 miles). Virtually all major rodundas and intersections on the autopista and carreteras leading into and around San Jose were closed due to protesters. I am sure the same will be the case Monday.

OK BangBang. Why not give us all a recap. I would but it would only be all to brief.

Brother BangBang was just trying to get the word out about a potentially complex problem in Costa Rica that may have caught people coming from the US off guard. I am sure that you, having lived here for so long remember what a mess of things the protests around the free trade deal caused. No one can predict how things will go, day to day when there are political disputes like this one.

The good news is that we can get on with the party weekend.

Gentlemen,

I not sure it would of been better for our friends and guests to be potentially stuck at the airport without having the time to decide to travel here or not themselves with links or stories of what could happen in advance. We didnt know what was going to happen.
Monday morning quarterbacking aside, I prefer to have our friends in the know and gage whether the trip is too risky for them to take or not.

It looks like we have the government being proactive to thank for the lack of disruptions along with the very low support the strike garnered (True Sportsmen called that one). There were many areas where protesters tried to block roads but the police were waiting and moved in and eliminated the problems rather quickly. In addition, the Caja reported only 1% of their workers were absent while ICE says only 7% of theirs missed work.

Well almost Admin 3. There is one predictor who is sure of his predictions and it's not Carnack The Magnificent."Virtually all major rodundas and intersections on the autopista and carreteras leading into and around San Jose were closed due to protesters. I am sure the same will be the case Monday. "

These strikes are no joke.

I was on the way to Manuel Antonio to take a visitor to the national park and stay a night on September 1st and we hit a wall of traffic just before Quepos. The fisherman blocked the main road at a critical river crossing at 5am and kept it blocked until 6pm. I wish I'd tuned in here first.

We were there at 10 am and had to turn back.

It is their country and I respect the way they settle their differences. I am just grateful they announce these strikes ahead of time.

Too bad. There are 2 back ways into Quepos.

Wow, you make it sound so simple.

I have driven the old road from Puriscal to Quepos on May 1st when the freeway got shut down. I have driven along beaches when a road was closed. I get along as good as just about anyone.

There have been attacks on people crossing the strikes.

We, Me and about a few hundred other drivers were parked hanging out for awhile. Most of them locals. I and them use Waze and were checking other routes. They know the roads. If there was an easy "back way" that was open, I doubt they would have been sitting there.

"Mata reported that a total of 400 police officers prevented blockades at several locations, mainly in Limón and San José.......Other groups of demonstrators staged blockades on roads in San José, Alajuela, Cartago and Heredia in the early hours of Monday, but National Police officers quickly removed them." Tico Times

Wow, So the police used force to stop blockades. They did not do this the last time.

If the police do what they usually do, nothing, then these blockades could have been a lot worse.
