I got the following email today...

Quote:
Unfortunately your data was leaked in the recent hacking of Ashley Madison and I know have your information. I have also used your user profile to find your Facebook page, using this I can now message all of your friends and family members.

If you would like to prevent me from sharing this dirt info with all of your friends and family members (and perhaps even your employers too?) then you need to send 1 bitcoin to the following BTC address.

Bitcoin Address:
1AEJiZFnELwRZVjmVSvDSwUaXNZy4X9bQN

You may be wondering why should you and what will prevent other people from doing the same, in short you now know to change your privacy settings in Facebook so no one can view your friends/family list. So go ahead and update that now (I have a copy if you dont pay) to stop any future emails like this.

You can buy bitcoin using online exchanges easily. If the bitcoin is not paid within 3 days of 23 Sep 2015 then my system will automatically message all of your friends and family members. The bitcoin address is unique to you.

Consider how expensive a divorce lawyer is. If you are no longer in a committed relationship then think about how this will affect your social standing amongst family and friends. What will your friends and family think about you?

Sincerely,
Paul

The thing is that I have never visited that website, much less signed up for an account. Whenever anything happens, every dirtbag and their mother tries to rip people off. Anybody else receive this?

don't reply to any emails like this. That proves a good, working email address and they sell it to listers.

When you go to a site that you don't want potential connections to yourself, set up a new email account for that site. I went to AM to check it out, created an email, never used the site again and deleted the email account. I don't even remember what it's name was.

obtain email headers after receiving this manner of nonsense. many of these Ch*ldren do not proxy in or out and headers do resolve to a cogent location.

ok...my bad.....have your "friend" obtain the header for you and request a favor. could cost a ducket or two. if the "friend" is feeling jiggy, he/she may just have a giggle at no cost to you.

your "friend" needs to have a fat pipe: at least 1gig up and down; preferably much more. request the friend -f the kind soul who sent the email. have fun 8)

On the other hand and far more practical: Delete it. *shrug*

I spoke too soon. It's back to 1 coin. And this time it came from Mike, not Paul. But seems that Mike also doesn't know the difference between "know" and "now".

Orange, FWIW:

Hello:

Below are the headers and email content of a communication sent by one of your users to an associate of mine.
What do you intend to do with this violation of your terms of service and this effort at extortion?
Please advise
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The recipients of the above email(s) will not respond I dare say, but also dare say they're going to act. And, I could be incorrect on where the above email(s) were sent. When ISP's (internet service providors) leave holes in their mail servers, all manner of nonsense is quite simple to do. The kiids who "administer" (and are paid well over six figure incomes) don't like to admit their shit don't stink, either. Bouncing from a couple of servers, including AOL in mexico and roadrunner in Colorado, among others. No more data to be given

What violation of terms of service?

It seems that you misunderstood my original post. I am not, have not, and will not ever be a member of Ashley Maddison website. So there's nothing to extort. This is some tech nerds wet dream of hitting it big by sending emails randomly and hoping to hit somebody who actually did sign up there.

What I intend to do is delete these emails as I receive them.
