I did a lot of walking around in February, and I found myself on the corner of Calle 6 and Ave 9. There were some sketchy looking drugged out types around, but nothing too scary. Is that as bad as it gets in San Jose or was I on the wrong part of 6th? Granted, it was the light of day, and I was completely sober. But I have been in much worse places in the states. I was just wondering if my blissful ignorance kept me from fully appreciating the potential trouble I could have found myself in.

"Dangerous" is a personal adjective, but I have had cops step over to me and tell me in English to be careful in that area. Still, it is a part of my almost-daily walk-path, partnered or solo. For the past 2 years, it ain't been that bad, but the farther south you go, and the later in the day it gets, I'd not be so tempted to wander aimlessly.

Like you, I've been in much worse in the US, but that isn't a reason to get braveheart in a foreign country.

Bad part of town (not the worst) best to take a taxi or go in group. Avoid at night

Why do you avoid eye contact with the police?

Have you ever seen Chili walk? He looks like he's on his way to murder someone. If he caught a cops eye, they'd probably call for backup!

I thought the same thing!! In the minds of many cops, avoiding "eye contact" is a sign of guilt (of something)!! Those cops on 6th (or anywhere else in Chepe) are there primarily to help keep you safe and not have any problems. I always speak to the police on the streets anytime I come face to face with them. They are not (contrary to popular Gringo opinion) just "out to get the Gringo"

Also, Sorry Mike but you are far from being the only guy who ventures down 6th. In the last few months I have seldom been there nor much of any of the mongering spots (Have had a couple of "interests" that keep this old fart busy). But until recently I have been to 6th probably at least once or twice a week for many years looking (just as You) for that "new diamond in the rough" to invite home for some fun!! I also have 3 good friends who are down there almost daily when they are in town--two live here and one is here 1/2 the time.

Not going on Sunday is a smart thing in my opinion. I also do not go to 6th nor 8th (the market area where I shop for fresh fruit, veggies, and meat) on Saturdays. Those two areas are just way to crowded on Saturdays, and Sundays all the ladrons seem to congregate around the pensions- hell it is so bad at times that even many Ticos will not go there on Sundays.

For many people, anything that is "out of the realm of normal appearing" (what they are use to seeing in their neighborhood in the states) is automatically "dangerous"!

There are several spots in Chepe much more "dangerous" (anywhere within a block of the del Rey for one- Ladrons go where the money and drunk Gringos are!!!!!!). If you want to see "dangerous" go to 15 de setiembre in Hatillo, or parts of Desambarados,or Aruca, or Tibas!! Hell even the police will not enter 15 de setiembre alone-they wait till there 4-5 before entering!!

6th is not for everyone!! For those of us with a sense of adventure, a desire to "go where most do not", a desire to "find the truly "new" (not the new to a certain place so she is "new"), those not afraid of their own shadow, 6th can be a fun place to visit!! For those who understand that part of the TRUE mongering experience is the "hunt" and understand that you will not always find what you are looking for, 6th street is a great place to experience!! And, on rare occasion find that "extremely rare trophy"!!!!

The reason I wont look at cops while in " that " is for me .....maybe not anyone else .....I stand out ,,,, I am a american with a tourist look , in a place that is know for cheap pu*sy and drugs.....why do I want to encourage a cop to ask me for passport, opportunity for shake down or nothing better to do than Phuck with me.....

10 years of visiting that area and never been questioned, or had a run in with a crazy, sounds like my methods work , the poster ask about 6th street and I shared what works for me.....

Again just what I have experienced , never have I seen an american in " that" area unless I brought him with me....

I hoping in the shower now and will make my daily tour in about 2 hours....anyone is welcome ,,,,, and the first thing I will tell them .....while we are in " that" area avoid the inteaction with street people and police.....

You actually invite guys into the shower with you, Chili?

I am/was a big cop target to be stopped and searched, and eye contact has never been part of the equation. If I do make eye contact, I generally smile a bit and nod my head in reverence to the authority. For me, eye contact has never gotten me stopped, but then again I am a magnet for them, so feel free to dismiss my words.

Had a similar question before my 1st trip. BangBang and others here are on point.

I went there solo around 8 or 9 ish one morning, think it was a Friday. Had a session at Portuguesa with a pretty nice Nica. Would I hang there after dark, no I wouldn't.

I didn't find it terribly intimidating. Just be smart and keep your head on a swivel.

Spot On!!! Always be aware of your surroundings, and if you ever get the bad vibe feel, get out or get into a taxi.
