its a "sin" tax...

No, I will not pay 83% mark-up on an original $40 price tag for "high mileage" entertainment.

You're not. You'll only see the INCREASE in the room rate, as you are already paying the original.

Col! Absolutely right! The locals will just absorb it just like we do when they increase tax on things back home. In the end, who cares? It's still cheaper than at home.

BD, thanks for clarifying the new proposed tax application. I'll be there next month & get a better feel for how things really are now compared to last October. I have been reading the board to get ideas & updates but you know everyone's perspective is different. I have noticed the board seems to have really slowed since last year when I was reading regularly.

OLD has a different perspective of how the tax will be administered. A flat tax based upon number of rooms versus a tax based upon reported income. I don't think the formula that he has presented will change things much. It is a thin line how much of the increase a business can pass on to the customer before they loose volume of business. The motel I use is expensive $40 but the charge is not for the hour it is for 12 hours. I would not pay much more for this room nor would the majority of the customers who are Ticos. As with other rumors that float around on this forum, I don't expect to see much of a change in the scene as a result of this tax.
