Apparently the real deal. My wingman's favorite lady sent him photos from her cell last night of the police all over the Del Rey. I just logged on to see if there was any news about it..

Raid? Lets start calling it what it is... an immigration check. No gringo should ever fear it, unless you don't have your passport copy or have drugs on you.

They are looking for illegals, and if somebody dumb enough to carry drugs falls into their lap, that's a bonus. Either way, tourists who have their papers have nothing to worry about.

Actually as I have been told by the police doing the "inspections" they are looking for 4 different things!! - And yes, that is really all they are-"inspections"!!! If you ever see an actual "raid" by the police here YOU WILL KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!!-- They are looking for/at: 1: proper ID and valid visa if not a Tico/a. 2: und***ge persons. 3: drugs. 4; Proper and up to date licenses and permits for the business.

As I posted a day or so ago in another thread, Tuesday I was in la Mansion when the police came in to do an inspection. This was at least the 6th time this has happened to me over the years. I knew what to expect and was not the least worried since I knew I had the proper papers and had done nothing wrong. They did all of the 4 things except they did not even ask me for my passport or cedula- just spoke to me with a "smirky" smile asking how I was doing. They could tell I had just finished a session (with a longtime regular).

This, as I said was an inspection!!

BUT:

The next day in the afternoon many police showed up in riot gear and according to two of the chicas, stormed the place, tapped off the streets in all 3 directions, arrested the owner, and closed the place down for 24 hours (it is back open now!!). And, NO I do not know what the exact charges were nor what they found or saw the day before that caused them to return. If any of the chicas know they are not talking!!

This was a raid!!!

I think I understand now... when that happens in my city its a raid so I guess the difference is the approach and attitude of police. It is much more aggressive here but usually occurs in low income areas.

Good explanation and detail BB57...call it a raid or inspection, it is not pleasant to any of the raided or inspected! I've personally never experienced it and do not look forward to either!

Do they actually frisk the gringos looking for drugs or just visually inspect?

Perhaps Lucky13 can comment on any of these raids/inspections experiences at Zona2...

I've been present during a couple of Del Rey 'inspections' and Americans typically don't have a problem but did see an American girl get taken in one year. She'd been in the country over 90 days and didn't have proof of her 'student visa'. She was NOT a working girl but one of a group of maybe 6-7 American college age of both sexes that seemed to be just enjoying themselves...but she got a trip to immigration out of it. Felt so bad for her. This is also why the majority of girls from other countries who might not be here legally are working Jaco...know of only one 'inspection' there in my 8 years here.

Walked by there about an hour after this and it was all taped off and not even the girls at Erotica knew what was going on. However, in today's Spanish news:

http://www.nacion.com/sucesos/poder-jud ... 49699.html

http://www.diarioextra.com/Noticia/deta ... rostitutas

This makes at least 4 places they've come in and arrested the owner(s) on the same charges...previous examples were mostly outside the Gulch.

I was there Thursday night...about 10:00 PM I walked out the door facing "Little Marlin". 3 cops surrounded me asking for my passport--handed them my copy, cop said they wanted my passport. Told him it's at my hotel..they told me they were doing an investigation and said stand by the wall.

They started grabbing everyone coming out and taking ID's..Cops started going inside and were taking pics from all angles of DR (don't know why)...After about 45 minutes they called my name and gave me my ID back and I headed back to SL.

Next night a girl at DR told me they closed Key Largo because of smoking violations (don't know if that was true or not).

First time in 18 years of CR visits I've had any interaction with Police!!

Seems clear to me why. Obviously they were taking pics for the Cien Boy yearbook :P

!

Did the cops leave you standing along the wall on the sidewalk or escorted you back inside while you waited for their "investigation" for 45 minutes??

The way I see it, this is harassment of tourists and bullying of HDR....WTF? Do they need to do this routinely, for what real reason? To make the life of a few Nica and Dominican chicas miserable? Or to scare away dollar spending gringos helping sustain the local economy?

This is the type of crap that helps sink the scene...real fast.

We had to stay outside on the sidewalk.....they frisked those idiots that are always hanging outside the door and some of the girls that came out with guys.....They didn't frisk me or any of the American guys (at least I didn't see any)........ I guess things happen!!

Except for feeding a few hungry K*ds, the monger tourism is chump change into their economy. When I fly into SJO, the plane is usually packed with family or medical tourists. I think they just might be trying for political gold stars by being seen to 'clean up' the city. According to Tellen, it was only locals that seemed to be harassed.
