Now booked for second trip to CR. Staying at SL from July 22-27.

Gave myself a little more time this trip so that I wouldn't feel obligated to fit as much in to a few days.

One week to go, and I'm fairly stoked.

I'm interested in getting out of the gulch for at least one or two days this trip. If anyone is interested in trying one of the touristy/nature options, ping me.

Out of San Jose, the best bet for a single traveler is the structured day tours offered by any hotel info desk. Best day excursion I think is the Poas and La Paz tour. I also recommend Irazu (if it is open) and Cartago as one trip (with Orosi Valley tossed in on some).

If you get 2-3 guys together, using private transport can end up less expensive than the individual price for the day tour but if you are solo, use the structured tours offered. You can get zip lines and other adventure stuff out of San Jose but it will be a long ride there and back, so wasting your time in a car. If you really like doing the adventure stuff, get over to the Pacific Coast like Jaco or Manuel Antonio.

I booked three tours out of the HDR on my first visit. It was the La Paz and coffee plantation, excellent. Zip line in the rain forest, very good. Paos volcano, excellent.

They picked me up at HLH (at the time) and dropped me back in the evening. I was solo and met some fun people. Almost hooked up with a girl from the tour. We went out the next day and afternoon. I got the sense she wanted to hang out more...couldn't figure out how to bring her back to HLH. Figured it would go south at that time.

I assume LA and HDR book the same tour companies. I had a really good experience and was back in time to play.

I always do the tours and recommend Expeditiones Tropicales, but if you want to save money and set your own pace, get a couple of guys and get together and go with someone like Puravida Transport.

Appreciate all the recommendations. I'd definitely like to see Poas.

the puravida transport guy is well known, reliable, and im sure trustworthy. why dont we message him and get a trip plan with him customized since im there same timeframe. message me and id be volcano or hot spring interested. i heard a bad experience once with the torgugas island trip (not puravida but acutual accident at site) i'd be interested in knowing if this would be a good trip in the opinion of my brothers on here.

Woke up this morning at 4 AM in anticipation of my departure today. I'm going to have to find a way to nap on a plane, or I won't have an very long night in SJ today.

For anyone interested in "out of gulch" activities, I've exchanged some PM's and we are thinking maybe Sunday to try to get a custom tour. I'll be arriving at SL tonight. Shaved head, mid forties white guy. Probably hanging out with a MacBook Pro at the SL bar if I've not found company.
