From Qcostaica.com today. The Happy Planet Index ranks Costa Rica #1 of all the countries analyzed. The country’s HPI 64.0 score reflects a high life expectancy, high levels of experienced well-being and a moderate ecological footprint.

But, where inside Costa Rica do the happiest people live?

The residents of Heredia, San José and Alajuela are happier than the Ticos (Costa Ricans) in the coastal provinces of Puntarenas and Limón according to the Felicidad Interna Bruta (FIB) – Gross National Happiness Index – as study by the company Coopenae and Eco Market Research.

Who are the people that they poll? The people don't seem all that happy to me. They are constantly complaining. Prices are going up, salaries not much, if you actually have a job. Crime is getting out of control. The barrios are becoming war zones with rival drug dealers having "territorial disputes". In my in-laws barrio, nobody goes outside after 7pm. Politicians (the whole government really) are completely corrupt.

With so many social issues I don't get how they seem so happy.

Not all expats live in areas you describe. Many live in beach communities far from the P4P environment. If you check out some of those communities you will find that they are much like the laid back communities associated with the surf towns of the 60's and 70's you could find along the California coast. Also, there has been a strong effort to maintain the this type of climate for the locals as well as the tourists. These communities sure beat Arizona and Florida for someone retired and looking for a stress free retirement.

doesnt seem very scientific, but it seems adults are the unhappiest
from the article http://qcostarica.com/residents-of-here ... ays-study/

The study was done in May 2015, with face-to-face interviews of 1,285 people across the country between 15 and 75 years of age.

The age groups with the greatest level of happiness are those between 15 and 18, followed by those between 19 and 25.

The groups with lowest level of happiness were those between 41 and 55 and 56 and 75 .

The ecology of the country and the diversity health are the two main reasons for happiness for Costa Ricans, revealed the FIB.
