I am finding that room only rate at Amistad has become somewhat high considering I can get rooms much cheaper at 4 star hotels in Manila or Bangkok.
Is there any upscale or at least comparable alternative in gringo gulch?

What does Manila or Bangkok have to do with Costa Rica? :?

You will not get a 4-star hotel outside the gulch for less than $150-200/night. Then you'll have to add $5-8/ each way for taxi to the gulch twice daily. And about 30 minutes in traffic each way. And they won't let you bring girls back most likely.

Stop overthinking it and stay at Amistad. Get the all-inclusive. You get lunch and dinner, and drinks. The food there is great.

The Sportsman's Lodge has some very nice rooms at prices that easily compare with the Amistad. It is all a matter of what you prefer. I think the room El Presidente at the Sportsman's is one of the best rooms available to party in for the money in San Jose.

if you were CRT Member you would get a discounted rate on ROOM Only rated at Amistad...

what is you budget and how much cheaper are you looking for?

As stated above, you really can't compare Thailand and Costa Rica. Two different economies.

I found that the Amistad's prices were quite reasonable for San Jose. With the all inclusive I believe it is a real bargain and I did not even drink much alcohol there. The food is great. Decent food in Barrio Amon / the gulch, can be quite expensive.

I usually stay at the Sportsmens as I like the atmosphere. There are usually deals for CRT members for the SL. There was just a summer time promo for 25% off with a hot breakfast included but I believe it is over. Room prices vary from pretty inexpensive for the courtyard to expensive in the Mansion Wing (though they are awesome rooms).

If you want something like the Amistad, laid back, I would look at the Dunn Inn. I have never stayed there but I have seen the rooms and they are nice and well kept. They have a restaurant on site but I believe the ownership and / or management of the restaurant has changed so I cannot comment on the quality or price.

I believe they also have a CRT discount but have heard that better rates can sometimes be had on the travel sites like Hotels.com.

It is conveniently located, very close to Zona 2, New Fantasy and a relatively short walk to the Sportmens or the Del Rey.

And if you are on a tight budget, do not forget the outrageous Costa Rica hotel tax that will be added to the room rate. It is usually not quoted.

If this was several years ago, I would have recommended the Presidente Hotel.

The 25% off promo dates start June 15 and goes through August 31. It is for CRT VIP members only, and requires four consecutive nights stay, and had to be booked by May 31.

And it must have been booked by Mat 31 which is long gone. So if you haven't booked it yet, you're SOL.

My bad, the promo is over, but the stay is in the future. I didn't read the complete flyer.

I guess it depends too what one considers "high" in terms of price. When in SJ, if available, I always try to stay in Leon at the SL. With tax and CRT discount it averages about $150 a night. To me that's a bargain and I'll take that any time. But that's just my personal preference.

I usually stay at La Amistad. For 90 a night , breakfast lunch and dinner included. All the beer wine and well drinks included, top shelf drinks 50 percent off. Free laundry service. Free trip to Jaco in the hotel van if you stay 4 nights. Also if you stay 4 nights you get free taxi ride back to the airport. Plus the hotel staff is great, I think they have a CRT VIP discount on the room as well. I just joined so I have not used that yet. I'm not sure how much discount it is. Plus the guts at La Amistad are refurbishing the hotel Castillo property and will be opening that up under the same concept as I understand.

Yes, they do but it doesn't apply to all-inclusive special, but that's already very generously discounted.
