CRT members, I am landing tonight around 9:30pm and haven't been able to get a response from Sid or some other folks mentioned on this forum yet. is there a way for me to get transportation arranged tonight? or should i just grab a red taxi? Where is the best place to get one at night where they won't rip / rape me? thanks.

two more questions:
ignoring ATM fees, should i remove some colon at the airport?
will taxi, girls, etc accept payments in colon or do i need usd everywhere?

At 9:30 or 10:00 you should be able to find a red taxi UPSTAIRS on the departure level of the airport who will have to leave the airport empty unless you are his customer. Offer 8,000 or 10,000 colones with "NO MARIA" (no meter)(about $16 or $20).

During the daytime, you'd find plenty of "takers" for your offer. At night, you may have to wait a few minutes. If you don't want to wait, take an ORANGE taxi downstairs on the arrival level.

There is a BAC (Bank of San Jose) ATM machine in the arrival area near the baggage belts. You should have some colones for the taxi, but the Orange taxis may take dollars. The bank upstairs on the departure level may be closed when you arrive. Search this site for the closing time. There are ATMs up on the departure level, too.

I use colones for EVERYTHING in CR except for the hotel room. But the girls and most taxis will accept dollars. Taxis will probably screw you on the exchange rate.

you're going to pay $2,000 or more for a 7 day trip...for Christ's sake just go outside and get an airport taxi.

I can only imagine the follow-up posts from this guy when he is so cheap the minuet he gets off the plane and is trying to save $5

I followed these instructions and found no problem getting a cab upstairs. The first one within 10 secs. To be honest, I felt a little more secured grabbing a cab upstairs as the arrival area downstairs swarms you with a gazillion amount of taxi drivers. One even followed me upstairs to show me the departure area. Creepo.

Anyways, I paid in Cologne and the meter ran up to exactly 12,000. It ran fast!!! You are right about paying in Cologne too. Best thing as there is nothing lost due to exchange rate (which is favourable these days). Thanks.

Since you are already there looking at your post time I will address a couple of things for others reading
The currency in CR is colones and if its late and you can't get change its not that important
Wave off any taxi offers as you walk out the door and go directly across the street to the parking structure and take the escalator to the second deck.
Catch a red taxi and offer him a $20 US or 10mil colone note to get you where you are going.
For most that would be the gulch and you will need to qualify that he knows where that is so have a printed map or card from the hotel if you don't have passing Spanish or a sense of direction.
I would pay $25 or 30 if there aren't many options and put the airport in the review mirror and get on w my trip but some guys might want to wait until morning to catch inter bus and save a few bucks.
In answer to whether or not girls, taxis etc will accept USD, yes of course they will but at your earliest convenience I wold highly recommend changing some cash for colones and especially the 1 and 2000 notes for taxis.
