HDR is the only hotel you should stay on your first visit, you will be spending most of your time there anyhow so why be far from the action? Go check out SL and amistad while you're here for a future trip.

Misinterpretations make credibility go downhill fast.

One of the reasons a lot of vets won't stay there is their rules about who can go to your room. At SL, you and your six best buddies can hang out in the room talking/drinking/smoking and it is all good. However, at DR, the only people going up to your room is anyone you pay the fee to allow upstairs. If you have friends staying there as well, it's all good but if you meet some cool guys you want to hang with and they are staying elsewhere, no way to have a room party. And trust, room parties (particularly at SL) are the BEST!!!

Interesting angle PVT.

I guess if you hang out with a lot of buddies, from places other than your hotel, and want to have them up to your room for parties, HDR's rules would be an issue. Personally, I come to CR for the chicas and to party with them, usually one on one, and in the privacy of my room. Then again, I tend to monger on my own...not really into drinking (other than an occasional beer or two) or gambling, or other stuff.

The bar and common areas of the hotel are plenty appropriate for any male bonding and socializing.

Regarding the security staff at HDR, they are excellent at spotting who is staying at the hotel and who's not. They are also pretty good at the entrance doors. They spot who is the tourist and who is the local on a first glance, always frisking the locals and asking for ID, giving a go ahead smile to the tourist. I've observed this through many years of staying there...never fails.

If it is your first mongering visit to CR, HDR is by far the most convenient and safest option. Cocal, in Jaco, would be the second most convenient.

JMHO!

I agree 100% that 'to each his own' should be the motto and there is no right or wrong answer, just varying opinions. I was speaking to the 'vets' who many times plan trips to be here together or just know a lot of folks. I've seen some guys having room parties every night and IMHO, that is where the best times are to be had.

HDR is a good option and perfect for the solo monger who wants nothing more than 'female company'. SL is more for the social monger who likes hanging out with buddies at the bar or in the room. Amistad is a good mix as you can have room parties or you can go solo the entire time without having to meet anyone if that is your choice.

I stayed at an apartment my first trip but always wished I'd have done Sportsmen's Lodge my first trip so that is where my opinion comes from...that and thousands of hours spent at the SL having a blast.

I guess a lot of guys do meet up in a group. I'm meeting friends at HDR, that's where we're staying. I've been coming to CR for years and stayed at SL for a couple of years- never had a bad time there. I've also stayed at Amistad, Zona, Castillo, an Apartment, Hemingway(my very first hotel), Scores, and even Hotel Nuevo.

Why couldn't I be a solo monger at the SL? Is there a rule posted at SL that says you have to meet, greet and make friends? I have quite a few friends I've made at the HDR who I still keep in touch with through this board. You're clearly speaking from your POV. You just LIKE the SL. Nothing wrong with that but stop spreading misinformation.

I see guys brand new to CR making friends at HDR just like they do at SL. Stop it already. There's nothing ELITE about the SL or any other hotel option in San Jose. SL is also boring most of the day and often dies very early in the evening.

You can't do that at SL?

I've sent HDR an email asking if I can bring some friends up to my room during my stay. We'll see what they say.

TicaFan...you can do whatever you like at whatever hotel you like. I was making very general assumptions. You can meet plenty of people at HDR, but you won't be having a room party. You can meet no one at SL but you will still have to walk through the bar and that is where they more social aspect comes in. At Amistad, you can do whatever. I do like SL the best and would be my choice today but that is just an OPINION not a fact. Nothing I have posted in this thread is really a 'fact' and is based on my POV.

Definitely let us know what they say...sure would be nice if they've changed that policy.

I appreciate the insights all you fellas provide. Certainly after scouring this site I have a pretty decent idea what to expect from all the places although I won't know exactly what I prefer until I'm actually there myself. I do imagine being able to socialize in a room or whatever is a positive if you have your own alcohol and can keep your bar tab low (drawback to socializing in the bar). Granted, I'd probably have to know the group pretty well to invite some dudes to have some drinks in my room lol. On another note, just got back from a Tijuana trip to a place called Hong Kong club. WOW.. Anyway, buddy of mine that I went with to TJ mainly stayed at Cocal when he visited CR. Says he prefers the girls in Tijuana. At least for quality and "bang for your buck". So....we shall see if his opinion is same as mine. As far as I could tell I don't think he spent much time in HDR. It is interesting the different perspectives out there. Anybody been to Hong Kong club recently in Tijuana that could share their experience and compare to CR?

DonJuan, you are certainly doing it the right way.

I just heard a story from a friend in San Jose about a guy who did no research and came down without even a hotel reservation. He did not even know about the girls!! His cab driver told him about the Del Rey so he got dropped off there with his luggage.  Later that night he was ready to check in to a hotel, but rather than get a room at the Del Rey, he decided to walk across Morazon Park to the Holiday Inn dragging his luggage.  He only made it part way until six guys accosted him with a razor and took everything, including his eyeglasses, money, passport, clothes, etc....all gone. Darwin's Law in action.

For me the nice thing about staying at the Sportsmens Lodge is that everything you might need or want is there or close by and many of the taxi drivers who hang around out front are honorable guys who speak some english. The gringos hanging out at the bar will most always help you if you ask. Many will take you under their wing and show you the town. The security guards vet the chicas and if you ever have any trouble in your room with a chica, all you need do is pick up the phone and the problem is addressed. :)

So does this mean it is unsafe to visit and get around in San Jose especially the area around HDR?

Wild guess here, but judging by the story...common sense goes a LONG way. I mean, you're in a new 3rd world country, walking around an unfamiliar area with all of your luggage and god knows how much cash....You are screaming for somebody to rob you. Easy target. You can point to pretty much any major city in the U.S. and face similar risks. You make yourself stand out as a newcomer in the wrong part of town and you become an easy target. There are criminals everywhere. I know people that have been held at gunpoint or even shot in broad daylight in decent areas of town here in Vegas. We had 3 murders on the strip within 2 weeks last year. Typically it's drunk fools who say something stupid to somebody else and then the knives start coming out. One girl was just shot outside the UNLV campus last week. Some beggar wanted some cash so she pulled out a wad of cash from her pocket, next thing you know she's being robbed at gunpoint and shot as she tries to run away (she lived). 2 am with a wad of cash in your pocket is probably best to avoid homeless strangers! Anyway, you never know what can happen, but taking precautions will lower your risk.

Actually, the area immediately around HDR is pretty safe to walk at night. Just use common sense, don't carry anything unnecessary (wads of cash, jewelry, etc.) and act vigilant.

The walk between HDR and Aurola Holiday Inn is 3 blocks through parque Morazan. Usually well patrolled by local police.

It might be a house rule, but I have walked right by the elevator guard with 3 male friends and headed to my room, with everyone carrying a drink. So it might be some form of profiling they use.

As for room smoking, I have a photo of my HDR room with the ashtray sitting on the table directly under the smoke detector.

There is a heavy cop presence up til around 10 or 11, and then as the parque empties out of local K*ds and lovebirds, the cops vanish and it is just another empty parque begging for a good mugging scene.

I learned my lesson long ago, and stay out of the parques at night. I will walk the periphery of some, but will not enter, no matter how open it appears. But then, I'm a chicken-shit at heart, so ...

If it's easier for you,you can take a picture of your form with a smartphone for Cocal and attach it to the reply email (if you don't have access to a scanner or fax machine).
