What's going on at SJO? Is it closed to all flights...no one in and out of Costa Rica? How about Liberia?

Airport opened up at 4am on Friday...and hasn't closed since. When the volcano shoots out enough ash and it drifts west towards the airport, they will close is completely. Volcanic ash does nasty things to jet engines...like destroy them. Here is the story of one such encounter:

(747 and all 4 engines flamed out)

Liberia would probably never be closed because of Turrialba as it is just too far away.

Speedbird 9. I read about this one. The ash did a nice number on the paint job and windshield too.

Absolutely right Orange...it basically sandblasted the windshield so bad the pilots couldn't see much of anything out of it. If I remember right, it was a night landing and the blurred runway lights were enough. However, once they did land, they couldn't see well enough to taxi because of the bright lights reflecting off the sandblasted window.
