Thanks for sharing this article! I read with interest until the 'Global Warming' part. All good points against the canal but IMHO there are more pros than cons. If it is built, it will be used. The Panama Canal is undergoing expansion for a reason.

He lost me at 'Global Warming'!!!

Great article, Bro Seahawk. Thanks for posting. About global warming: the Earth has gone through many, many periods of warming and cooling. The only real dispute now is how much mankind is contributing to the present episode. Arctic ice is disappearing at an alarming rate; this will enable trans-Arctic passage of ships, cutting transit times between Asia and Europe in half--not so much effect on the U.S. I am personally against this project for all the reasons cogently stated...but I don't get a vote. Evidently Nicaraguans don't get much of one on this grandiose vanity project.

Jazzbo, you are drinking the liberal kool-aid. The Arctic ice is going through the same cycles the rest of the earth is. Do you remember the "Ice Age" warnings in the 1970's? For every reference you can provide to support your theory of Arctic ice "disappearing at an alarming rate", I can provide one to the contrary. Why do you think the alarmists changed their slogan from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change"?

Science is neither conservative or liberal. It deals in measureable data and facts. Unfortunately the extreme right is on an anti-science bent and only believe in political ideology or religious dogma. I choose to believe what 99.9% of climate scientists say and what I learned in middle school science and physics.

This canal is a giant boondoggle. There is the "in the name of progress" concept and just plain common sense. I can't believe Nicaraguans are not in a major upheaval against this. I would be most worried about the world's most precious and most disappearing resource(no, it's not oil); water. The biggest reservoir which could sustain the country in a water crisis(they happen and are happening), and they are considering mixing saltwater into it? Talk about selling out your country....especially when the top cargo carrier says they have no demand or interest for it :?: :?: :?:

I just can't help but to weigh in on this..

GoodDayJohn, you must own a lot of stock in Exxon or something. The fact is indisputable that the earth's temperature has risen 1.5 degrees over the last 100 years. That may not sound like much, but it is the reason that the polar cap is melting, Greenland is melting and the land ice in Antarctica is right behind. These are not just typical cycles of the earth. Read this month's National Geographic. Check out the HBO documentary show, "VICE" this week. Turn the channel from Fox news for a moment and you will see that this is no longer a debate. I find it unfathomable that people are still denying global warming, climate change, whatever the hell you want to call it.

But hey, man, I'm not screaming from the rooftops to stop driving your SUV's, or think its a good idea to jack the taxes up at the pump. And not to be Debbie Downer here, but the bottom line is it's too late. What in the hell are we gonna do to reverse what we have done so far. Sure, you can slow it down, but are you really going to get China to stop pumping crap up into space anytime soon. Of course not. So please just accept the reality that we have given the biggest middle finger of all time to future generations. You and I won't be around to see the shit really hit the fan, but to think it's not coming is beyond naive.

I appreciate the calm, civil way you have laid out the scientific position on this issue. I agree 100% with what you said. As one with no ch!ldren, I can only hang my head in sorrow. Yes, I drive an SUV and no regrets.
As one wise old owl or another has said, "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem."

As much as I found Mr. Carlin screamingly funny, his notion that we shouldn't consider the planet in our human actions and do nothing to mitigate the damage we do to ourselves and others is just flat wrong--similar to seeing a car rolling towards a cliff and giving it a nudge so it gets there faster. As bad as Beijing's air quality is, there is worse: https://images.search.yahoo.com/images/ ... -fh_lsonsw

I didn't say it was a bad thing. I'm just surprised that it's still on the air, given the low ratings.

...Which would probably zoom if they indulged in the shrill hysteria of the Fox "News" teams. Admittedly, MSNBC can be a bit monotopical at times (unhealthy focus on MH-370, for example) but at least that's not the minor incident Benghazi was.

Jazz, like most believers of man made global warming, is falsely equating climate change with intentionally polluting the environment via his reference to air quality in China. Essentially what they are saying is "if you deny man made global warming then you support dumping poison in the rivers and probably burn tires to heat your house".

The catastrophic predictions of opportunistic sleazeballs like Al Gore have never came true. Not even once. The climate change they warned us about never happened, so they moved the goal posts and renamed the scam. It is absolutely bewildering to me that people can be deceived so easily.
