Those of us who knew who Shoe Shine boy was, I am sorry to have to report this news. The streets of San Jose are a tough place to try to live your life. RIP

That is sad. Missed him in January. What happened? I said a prayer for him.

I used to give him plenty of great left overs from the Del Mar. The last time i saw him he almost got ran over blocking the road for me to cross to the DelRey.

I always looked forward to seeing him and he always gave me the straight info on people.

Sad news indeed :( I remember him from 12 or 13(?) years ago. He wore a dark suit and a tie in recent years. When the New York Bar was open, he'd always hold an umbrella for us to walk between there and the Del Rey. He even knew some of us by our first names :) RIP

So sad, I think I saw him on all my trips, I normally don't give money to beggars but somehow he wormed his way into my heart, I brought him an old tie of mine on one of my early visits. I always gave him money when I saw him, he held an umbrella for my wingman "Grandpa", walked him across the street from the HDR once, hailed me a cab from the back entrance of HDR when it was raining heavy and opened the door for me.

He always remembered me when he saw me, surprisingly remembered my name when I forgot his. I saw him beat up a couple times, his friend "Rudy" who is actually from New York and hangs around HDR told me last visit he was going downhill, lost his apartment and girlfriend and started messing with drugs.

I'll remember his goofy smile and ragged suit and tie, I hope he's in Heaven and at peace, he had a tough life and was quite a character, I'll be sorry not to see him next visit.

Wow, I just saw him a couple of weeks ago, and he remembered me after 4 years. I was surprised. I used to leave him my shoes and he would always return them to the Presidente. He was a salesman for sure, I had a pair of suede shoes he wanted to clean while I was at the DR. He was always smiling. That is sad, what happened?

Does anyone knows the cause of his death? Was it murder, overdosed on drugs, hit by vehicle or by a disease? Anything? Even if it's hearsay..

for the past 5-6 months he was in very rough shape and hanging on the sidewalk (horizontal) on ave 7 and calle 2 about 2 blocks west of the Hotel Europa. I saw him all the time on my way to 6th street.

There are a number of old men on the street there who are on their last legs either drinking rubbing alcohol or consumed by crack, meth or all three.

I agree, he was an ok guy and once told me he has been on the streets since he was 12
