Does the SIM cards (for cell phones) include data in there pricing? I have seen discussion on obtaining a CR sim when I arrive but they generally reference Talk and Text, but I am unclear if I should use my old (unlocked) smart phone or just stick with picking up a cheap throwaway for voice/text?

Here is the information on the data plans for ICE/Kobli Prepaid chips.

http://www.grupoice.com/wps/portal/kInternet_prepago

if you don't activate a data plan, then you get charged by the KiloByte for Internet use.

If you use the Internet frequently, then it's best to just text descarga to 8888, and let it deduct 500 colones per day. You get 2MB of bandwidth and 350 MB per day.

It renews each day automatically. So you have to text SALIR INTERNET to turn off the package before you leave. Otherwise it will eventually deplete your balance.

You can check your prepaid balance with *1150#

I walked into the Claro store and had them set up my quad-band phone for me. On every trip it works right at the airport, and once in town I walk back into the store and put $5 on it. It lasts me all week, and the next time I arrive, it has enough service to work at the airport again.
