CRT Members:

My chronic dementia is kicking in again, can you tell me if you can convert $100 bills to colones at the airport bank kiosk? Thank you

Yes, the bank upstairs will change $100 bills at a rate much better than Global Exchange downstairs. Average rate at banks today is 530 while Global Exchange (by the baggage claim area) is only giving 462

I'll even toss in a handy link to compare the rates at different places:

Several times, I've exchanged 4-5 $100 bills at the airport bank with no problem.

Now, I use a totally-free Schwab ATM card with no problem ...... so I don't need to carry cash. The Schwab exchange rate is EXTREEMLY close to the bank rate.

Thanks PVT and RAC:

One final question, I plan on converting 3K there, which I have done before with smaller bills, will they accept the total 3k in $100 bills?

Not totally sure on that one Zunbake3, the most I've seen changed was $1500 and it was all in $100 bills. Teller didn't even look at him twice although she examined each bill with care.

Thanks PVT. I will give it a shot. I just hate carrying all those $20's in my money belt.

At the upstairs bank, I exchanged $1500, all $100 bills, on Jan 30. The exchange rate was 531 colones

Short answer is yes. They will ask you a lot of questions like, "Where are you staying?" Most of the guys say Holiday Inn.

I have converted 3K there before and they never asked any questions. I just needed a confirmation on doing it all with $100's. Thanks.

Zunbake, I have taken clients upstairs for 3 years to the Bank of San Jose. I sometime exchange money myself there. They always take 100 bills as long as they are real and not counterfeit and they always ask questions. Not a big deal, just like to let the guys know what to expect. Walmart is my place of choice to exchange money but not for that large amount. YES, they will take your Franklins.
