If what I have heard about the group that was/is :?: in negotiations with the present owner(s) is true it definitely will NOT be a "Monger friendly" hotel. I do not know if that group is still in negotiations though. As for as a shortage of rooms, it might actually be a good thing for the other hotels. From what I see and hear, with the greatly reduced numbers of Mongers visiting San Jose the last couple of years, except for 3-4 weeks a year the hotels have not been running at full occupancy, some not even close.

I think the people taking over ARE the owners of the bldg. And it would not be monger/girl friendly.

I'd like to remind members that posting

1. False information that a business that is actually open is closed
2. Announce on behalf of a business that it will close in the future

Are violations of the forum rules.

Yesterday, I received a phone call from the owners of the Mona Lisa and they asked that this rumor be denounced as a false.

As a member of over 10 years, I have to say this is a totally ridiculous position. You said the same basic crap about Scores, thereby basically coming across as an apologist for those who line your pocket, and not the administrator of discussion board for those who wish to share information about hobbling in CR. Ban me if you wish, but that is phucking bullshit.

+1 Just where are these "rules" in the list of "forum rules" :?: :? People have been speculating about things, and posting about rumors on this board since day one, and all of a sudden today (after almost 12 years) it is against the rules????????????? Dozens of personal attacks go un-noticed, but someone says something against a sponsor and it is against the rules! Personally I am surprised it has not come up sooner concerning the reported thiefs!

If it is based on unfounded and untrue rumors, let the owner/s involved so state and stop futher discussion of the subject, but to change the rules in midstream is just totally bullcrap!!!!!! And people wonder why a lot of the long time members no longer post!!!!

I was there in the middle of last month for a week while they had their $39/nite promo going. I also heard they might be under new ownership at the beginning of February contingent on financing for the new owners.
The poker rooms were going strong in the evenings, especially on the weekend. Not much action in the casino itself, though. The restaurant was busy during the evenings but not much going on for lunch.
There was a steady flow of chicas through the bar but I noticed there weren't too many takers and that the chicas didn't tend to stay too long like they had on my previous visit to the place during superbowl weekend a year ago when the place was booked up. Keep in mind this was during mid-December when things are somewhat slow.
I did not have any problems with the safe (once they brought it in) or with what I left in it. As others have mentioned, there seemed to be a slew of minor problems with the rooms themselves such as the TV not working (not configured for cable), the fridge being out, the bulbs in the lamps needing replacement, the switch on the bathroom fart fan needing replacement, etc. The staff was courteous enough and prompt in responding to these issues. Individually, these were minor things but taken together they detracted from the overall experience and were a collective annoyance.
For $39/night I can't complain too much. Even though the place did not appear to be the chica hotspot it used to be it is well situated and within walking distance of the SL, the HDR, the NF, and Zona II and Scores - and for you health buffs - the City Sport gym.
Since I mentioned Scores, I want to let you “occasional” visitors know that they now have a different business model. I know, I know, this is old news but it bears repeating for those of us that are not regulars on this board. The place is more like the HDR now. Chicas opening asking price is now $150, like at El Cocal in Jacó (but I won't get into that here), the chicas are not employees anymore like they used to be, and the rooms are still $55 and are charged separately. It's up to you to negotiate the chicas down. I didn't see anything worth $200 (I could have stayed in the States and gotten better quality talent for that kind of money) so I finished up my drink and went over to New Fantasy where I had a nice session for a quarter of the price. Just sayin'...

Just for clarification, you mean a sponsor, right? I am allowed to speculate if an MP will close?

Many thanks for the update, it was still open when I left town on the 17th of last month but, as they say, all good things come to an end. Don't know the whys or the wherefores of the closure but I'm pretty sure it had at least something to do with the huge price disparities between itself and the competition. Who knows, maybe the former partners next door will pick up the pieces and reintegrate it into their business... As others have noted here on this thread, mongering and tourism in general is down in SJO. If this trend continues there are likely to be more closures of MPs and hotels, be they chica friendly or not. Let's hope for the best.
