Being calling for this the past 20 years. The only reason the embargo is still in place is to appease the Cuban exile voting block in south Florida. It is all political. These were all the fat cats who fled with their money when the shit hit the fan and still claim they have holding there. Really?

Imagine if there was a communist revolution in the States, would you flee or stay and fight a resistance movement? Patriots they were not.

While I think that lifting the embargo is long overdue, I fear that the US's puritan sex policies could easily phuck up a wet dream. Just look at the former relatively good mongering destination of Puerto Rico.

Yeah, within a year, there will be "Don't drink and drive" and "Say No to Sex tourism" TV spots.

Well having been there myself all I can say is that now we going to aid and abet the Castro/communism dictatorship. Half the people there, who have any ambition, would like to see it change but now this won't be happening anytime soon.
And be careful what you wish for. With the increase in tourism from the states you can say goodbye to cheap p*ssy there.

Does this refer them or us? Not wanting to start a political thing here, but the main thing that I think is important is that the policies have not worked, and the Cuban people, who really couldn't give a damn about politics, are the ones who have suffered the most. Time to move on. My guess is that this will open the flood gates of change with the availability of internet alone. Yet my biggest concern, is that with the opening of eventual travel to Cuba from US, and all you guys heading down there, my girlfriend will look like a human pin cushion when you guys get done

One of the driving forces behind the embargos and bans was the Cuban government's public assumption of millions (billions in today's dollars) of real estate and personal property of many business and citizens of the US. Regardless of the 'who put Castro in power, CIA intervention, blah de blah' crap, there should be a settlement being hinted at.

Totally different. The US picks up the tab for that stinkhole island. I have a friend from there that says tourism to Cuba from the US will spell disaster for Puerto Rico.

"People often tell me that they'd love to travel to Cuba because it seems like such a fun place. I tell them of my uncle who, well into his old age, would wake up at 4 in the morning to get in line for a ration of bread. I remember the first time I visited Cuba, I watched my uncle come home with a piece of bread that had more in common with a hockey puck. I couldn't believe that my elderly uncle would wake up every morning to stand in line for that.

People often tell me they want to walk the streets of Old Havana and see the crumbling buildings. I tell them of the countless young girls who work as "jineteras" -- slang for Cuban prostitutes -- to help earn money for their families who live crammed inside those walls. It's sickening to think that so many men from around the world come to Cuba for just this reason.

Peeps should take some time to read the history of Cuba. There is a reason why the "revolution" took place and took root as it did. Cuba was out BITCH for decades and we repeatedly RAPED her. Eventually they had had enough.

Sometimes people lose and there is no recourse. That's just life and the luck of the draw. All the Cubanos and their descendents who came here will just have to eat it. 53 years of blockade has hurt more than helped their country. Do we really think the status quo will someday "free the people"? Hell no Time to try something different. I suspect in 10 years time after the Methusaleh Castros pass away, things will be so much better.

I think the Dominican Republic will take a big hit. As if that island isn't bad off enough already.

For those of you who read I recommend Cuba by Hugh Thomas. He was a well known historian and a bit left of center but it's a very good book. At least start with the Spanish War era (1898). Lots of personalities on our side involved in that including TR and Wm Randolph Hearst.

For those of us who observe the travel ban, we won't being saying goodbye, we'll be saying hello to the closest legal prostitution for many of us.

Some of my neighbors are from Cuba. Just three weeks ago at Thanksgiving dinner, I brought up the subject of normalizing relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Their thought was that the leadership in Cuba does not want it, because the few in the leadership control almost all the wealth in Cuba. By opening their country they will relinquish some of that control. That's another side of the coin to be considered.

I am delighted to say I agree with Bro Phoenix Rising 100% on this. And to be a smart-ass for a minute--look at all those 50's-early-60's cars this will free up for export.
The current Cuban regime can't last much longer, and after them come younger, more technocratic, more pragmatic managers. It'll still be a crap-shoot but the odds are in favor of more freedom...until US investment banks and hedge funds buy the place up.

He's written on the subject twice. Here's the newer, Bro jackitrehorn's mention: http://www.amazon.com/Cuba-History-Hugh ... ref=sr_1_1
