Thanks for the article, Bro JackieT. I've fallen into that trap on a few Boards (mostly music but one on language, of all things) and quickly quit them. I also deleted all I had to say, on the way out. Who needs the added stress of defending yourself against some online butt-wipe who means nothing to you? I agree that the problem is getting worse...and why Admin policing--loose or tight--is important.

IMO...

Why take-in what a "troll" says in the first place. If I choose not to respond to the negativity of what another says, I have not given them the power they seek. I also have not taken in their "hide behind the keyboard power". I always read, and judge, what others say in response to what I post. That does not mean I need to respond in any fashion. Should I choose to respond to someone trying to flame me, I lose my power, and they gain theirs. A win for them and a loss for me.

The problem as a youth I was taught to "be a strong man" my judgment must be right. I lived that life for fifty years, and for me it did not work. I used to beat people up with words until they submitted to my face, I was correct. They often really did not mean it, and would mumble something (usually what an assh*le I was) when walking away. It was a high for me that lasted for about five minutes.

For me, fortunately, I have learned that my judgment need not be correct on every occasion, and will never be. I now listen to another's point of view, and can change instantly if the alternate point of view is what I deem valid. I learn much more from those who disagree with me, than those who do agree with me.

The only way I can give a "troll" power is to buy into his weakness. If I choose to get into a flaming war, I lose and the "troll wins.

As always, feel free to flame away, I have on my asbestos underwear today.

I used to get on this political site sponsored by the Miami Herald, you created a nickname like what we do here and espouse your views on any political topic and do battle with those that had opposing views and made on line friends who were like minded. It was often great late night internet fun, people would challenge each other, insult each other, etc., very similar to how we do things here.

I foolishly used an internet name that I also used when I joined a dating site (this was 25 years ago, I never heard of Costa Rica and was forced to get my poonage through an old and happily given up hobby called "dating").

One of the more obnoxious bloggers was frustrated because I could easily disprove his arguments and he couldn't argue my arguments with facts, so he'd resort to shrill accusations and insults which I refused to follow suit with, I kept calmly disproving his arguments and frustrated the hell out of the guy.

Everyone was anonymous and we all liked it that way. In any event, this guy researched my handle and found my pic and description of myself on the dating site and posted it for revenge. I had him removed from the site but no longer wrote in myself, it was a little eerie that some unknown oddball "stalked" me...
