Bashful, You might not want to consider the 'perpetual tourist route for a long term way of living here as I have. Word is out (AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT) that Costa Rica (at least some in inmigracion) are tired of perpetual tourists. They are beginning to really crack down by no longer giving us 90 days. My last two trips out when I reentered they looked at every page of my passport, then I got a lecture and stern warning and reduced days (80, then last week, 70). Guess I was lucky!! My friend who has only been living here a year only got 60 and we came in together this past week. I have been told that others after being warned a couple of times have only gotten 21 days. It looks like no matter what the law says individuals within the government have decided to eliminate perpetual tourists.

I have finally gotten tired (or maybe too old) of the trips out every few months, and was already planning to start the residency application in January. Now I am working on getting it started ASAP. Anyone have any suggestions (based on personal experience, not "he said, they said"!!) as to who to use that is fast, efficient, and that I won't have to hock my gold tooth in order to pay them!!! I have talked to a couple so far and neither impressed me as being overly trustworthy!!

One of the reasons I will never do business with ARCR!!!! Several years ago one of the owners there even tried to tell me 2 days after I had returned from Panama with no problems that CR had shut down the border to perpetual tourists 2 weeks earlier!! That "they" were going to "put a stop to the damn perpetual tourist"!! He said it like he was one of the "THEY"!!!

mmmmmm sounds familiar

On the up side of ARCR..

a friend of mine who is a resident and also carries INS insurance joined ARCR in May for $50 and was able to qualify for their group INS health insurance policy.

The rate went from $3300 annually to $2400...a nice savings and they review and process your claim for an additional $10 unless you want to do it yourself.

I believe a FREE qualifying physical exam is mandatory

I am glad I am not the only one that sees AM Costa Rica and ARCR for what they really are!!!!!!!

Zman, you asked if the problems we are having occurred coming back from Panama! NO! Penas Blancas coming back from Granada. I quit ever going to Panama (along with a lot of other people) about a year ago when Panama imposed a regulation that to enter Panama you had to have a ticket good for no more than 90 days from your entry date back to your country of residence. For us residents of the USA that means an airline ticket!! My understanding is this is not the law, but just something that the director de inmigracion there decided to do! Reportedly it has cost Panama millions in tourist dollars!!

I have thought about going to Nacaragua via the Los Carlos route, just never have. I know I will have to leave at least one more time so may try it then. And Zman, you are totally correct in that the 3 day thing is customs not inmigracion and is only necessary if bringing new items into the country. I do not just go and turn around like some do, but I do not think I have ever stayed out the 72 hours (even when I had bought items). I just do not like the 5-6 hours on a bus and then turn around and do it all over within a couple of hours (too old), and whether Nicaragua or Panama, I like to spend a couple days there each time. I have always gone one day, stayed 2 days and returned. Usually works out to about 65-66 hours, but I have never worried about, nor had a problem with it not being 72 hours.

EdB, I have thought about doing the residency thing myself, but I know how CR is and do not want anymore problems than is absolutely necessary. I (think) I would rather pay a few hundred extra than to screw it up and have to start over. Also, my state of residency is Florida not Ark. Birth certificate would come from Ark. Police letter, from Florida. I am hoping to be able to do it all from here also. Biggest problem is in Ark. the Records office issues the certificate, sends it to you then you have to send it right back to the Sec. of State's office for notarizing. THE 2 OFFICES ARE IN THE SAME BUILDING AND RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO EACH OTHER BUT THEY WILL NOT TAKE IT FROM ONE TO THE OTHER! And people thing the government is strange here!! Also, my understanding is that the police letter now has to come from the FBI, not your local police. Supposedly they finally realized that a local police report only covered info from THAT one police department and would not show if one had a record in other states!! I may well be contacting you EdB for info!! Thanks!!

Hmmmmm!! I am sorry for completely hijacking this thread! I do think both subjects are good and there is a lot of info that should be presented. But I wonder if THE ADMIN could possible figure out a way to separate the last few posts dealing with perpetual tourists and residency and move them to a new thread.

Should be easy for them to do but if they decline, the OP Bro Postupright could just add on to the Thread title. A funky solution, to be sure...

Greengo, WTF has any of your post which is mostly unintelligble garbage full of hatred and disgust for the country YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE IN...

ignore him. "Greengo" is just a pseudonym for someone else on the board who likes to stir up trouble, as long as it's not under their own name. Classic troll bullshit.

In other words, a sock puppet???????

I've been assured via a PM some time back that he exists - however, the person did not provide any details, and other than this person, no one has ever seen the guy; nor will he "engage" with you on line. (I'm sure he "exists" - but more likely as someones sock puppet.

(Oh - if you are not familiar with the term, a Sock Puppet is simply another identity created by someone on a message board - in other words, they are one and the same - normally, a sock puppet is full of praise for the guy who created "him" - but not always - in every Terms of Service I've ever seen on a message board, they are banned - and if your caught with one, you get banned - at its worse, they can ruin a message board - you have all sorts of entities that don't exist talking to one another.

This is different than someone creating a name, and posting stupid stuff - in other words, engaging in trollish behavior - certainly not a complete list but recent examples are:

Uncle Herman
Vegan Bob
Hangman
Adolph Hitler spelled backwards

I'm convinced they are the same person - and their sense of humor is a real knee slapper - kinda like expelling a huge amount of gas on a crowded elevator........

Frankly, all Greengo would have to do is show up at, say the Sportsmans, and that would settle it - so until we get some correct sightings, I'm not so sure about the guy.

He posts his blather, and that's it - the ones I love are the "Greengo Fan Club" - who look at his spouting nonsense the way Wall Street looked to Alan Greenspan, and Lubavich Jews looked to Menachim Schneerson when he was alive, hanging on every word     (I'm sure many are unfamiliar with either but its a great analogy :)

GREENGO--INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY and unintelligible blather. Interesting in a 3rd person, easily ignoreable way. But he sure bought space in our heads, didn't he?

If you need help with anything here in sunny Florida, let me know, I can help. If you send BD to the local police department, he's liable to get arrested and have a warrant issued for you, you better let me handle it...

Netgems, the police record now has to come from the FBI directly. No longer will a record from local police work!!

Actually this really makes more sense. A local police record is just that--LOCAL and would not sho if a a person had a record in another state or maybe even in another part of the same state!! FBI report covers the entire country!

According to some he is an "Oricle"

I think a very phucked up individual who in reality does not exist - just because you say it in a nonsense fashion, does not make you right, nor does it make you smart - the fact that:

No one has seen the guy
He never engages with anyone - posts his nonsense and that is it

Really makes me question whether he exists - its a fair question.

Well, "Greeengo" - what the hell are you - a real person, or a sock puppet :?:

I'll buy you dinner my next trip - any place you want - prove you exist.

I have a better chance of seeing Jesus..........................

(Aqualung :?: :?: :?: :?: ...

what are we back in the '50's or mid '60's - nice to see your knowledge of things SCUBA ended right about the time "Flipper" went off the air - you were probably in the Luke Halpin fan club <He played Sandy, the older brother; I'm sure you used to jerk off to a picture of him>

You probably loved Porter Ricks, the father - and you likely never wondered why Bud, the younger son had a strong NY accent while living in the Florida Keys - well did you - I didn't think so....but you extend your sympathy to a phucking sock puppet - good luck on the Flipper reruns - just remember to wipe off your hands before touching the remote :P :P :P :P         )
