Opinions should be just that, opinions!! Not "this is the right way, and ONLY way; and any other way is wrong"!!

I exchange money at the BCR in the INS building almost every trip. I have never had to show my passport, only a color copy. I usually exchange $200-$300, so that may be the reason they don't ask for my passport. I was there last week. I think my number was about 13 from the ones being served, and I was finished within 15 minutes of the time I went in. I like that branch because it is very close to whatever hotel I am staying at, thus not so much risk in carrying more money than usual.

Guys, its not a matter of "right or wrong" - well, it kinda is :) - for example, Bang, as a resident, Obviously you are not going to go to the airport bank. But 99% of visitors arrive by air.

And its so aparant that the easiest, most convenient way to go is go to the airport bank, exchange, buy your exit visa, then continue on to your hotel.

John, 15 min's in a Costa Rican bank that you don't have to use; taking the time to do so - and the - I'll grant you, slight - risk of being spotted and robbed - my question is why f.u.c.k. with it? Also, John - your copy served as your passport - you showed a copy of it, just not the original.

These are all secondary options, none as good as the afore mentioned airport one, and I don't think its a simple matter of taste, or preference. If I strongly disagree, its not a personal attack - I'm sure you are a good guy, and Bang is a personal friend - I just think the best way - well, for everyone, but especially new guys - is the way I and others described it.

I arrived on a Spirit flight out of FLL after midnight a few trips ago and obviously the airport bank was closed, so I used the one across from the Morazon Hotel - all it did was reinforce my opinion that Costa Ricans are used to shitty service and ineffiency - at the airport bank, I get what I need and its over and I'm on my way.

The other options mentioned are great as secondary sources - the better way - and the reasons given why the airport bank is BETTER are valid.

Seems like if you are going to disagree in any way, or forcefully stand up for your opinion it makes you negative - not really talking about you John, but Redfield posted a really crazy <ie bad> way to do things and, I guess, expected to be validated for his post, as well as his suttle, cunning humor  :? :P

Just b/c some one has another way to do something does not make it better. I just think this is one of those issues that the best answer is right in front of us.

Ok...all I did was ask a question....had some great answers and didn't bash you Scuba but your sarcastic cut here is out of line...

First, at least I can spell "subtle." Second, you don't need to keep reinforcing your idea of the best way to change money...especially while putting others down like you did above. All you have done is to digress from a helpful person posting what you believe to be the best way to change money upon arrival to demonstrating that that you are a bit or more of a bit of an ----.

Let's wrap up this thread. Thanks for everyone's help.

When I went the 'offical rate' was 551, and I got 549 out of them. Later I got 547 out of Colonial Casino.

oh, and at the airport they ask for your hotel,. Say Holiday Inn San Jose. Otherwise they have to look up what it is. At Colonial Casino they don't even ask for your passport if you convert sub $300 at a time.

I never use dollars, and they will 'exchange' it at 500 or worse.

-Hotel you should pay in USD since that's how they quote the price, so no conversion is needed.

Exchange at the Airport BANK - NOT the Cambio - located across the street from Baggage/Arrivals in the ticket lobby - go in the door, turn right and walk down - right before you come to the bank stop and purchase your exit visa (one less thing to worry about - its done; I don't know why guys resist doing this at the airport - sure - you can buy it at some hotels, but why worry that they have the forms, their computer is "up", have to pay them a fee......do it at the airport and one less thing to worry about).

When you get to the bank, change what money you wish - I'm in between those who use colonies for everything - I carry a supply of $1's and $5 - you can use dollars many places, so not the end of the world, and if you do run short you can change $50 or $100.

Get the money exchanged and your exit visa before you leave the airport!!!

This is EXCELLENT advice. Thank you guys for taking the time to share your vast knowledge! It will be put to use and is much appreciated.

Its always a pleasure when someone acknowledges good advice, says thank you and realizes most who offer such advice are looking to save someone else hassles.

I am a little annoyed at the "we better validate every idea, no matter how lame" of some who posted on this thread.

I am fortunate in that I usually arrive in SJO while the real bank at the airport is open. So, I always go change some money and pay the departure tax. In town, I use BCR bank and Colonial Casino. Recently, I checked out the new casino at the Holiday Inn. They gave me the bank rate. No f uss, no muss. At the end of the month and on the 15th, the banks here can be really jammed. Also, mid-week and early morning times are always better for banking. I have taken Rac´s advise and gotten me a Charles Schwab card, and I am about to go and try it at a BCR ATM. Yesterday, it did not work at a BAC Bank ATM. Will report back if it does not work.

My Schwab card has always worked at any BCR branch in SJ........ and also at other bank branches around SJ, including BAC.

I have never had my Schwab card NOT work.

"change at the airport if you arrive in the daytime"

My flight arrives at 8 pm on a Saturday night - Airport bank is probably closed at that time, correct?

That Website is a bookmark site--not only do they have all the real currencies no matter how obscure, they even have digital-only currencies like BitCoin. Bro Zunbake has done us a solid. Thank you.

I was disappointed with the Airport rate yesterday at 535. Another member mentioned 560 the other day, especially since I converted 2K. I know, I am crazy, but I like to spend in Colons when in town. Then when I went in the bathroom at the airport to put the cash in my money belt I peed on myself a bit because I am an old fat phuck, but had a great night with my favorita in Escazu, so I feel better now, YO!!!!!!!! Also, I listened to another member and got a taxi at the departure and saved 10 bucks going to Escazu. I negotiated 10 mil because I just don't have it in me to ask for 5 mil!

Following up on my previous post, I used my new Schwab card at the BCR bank ATM across the street from the Morazan Hotel. Worked, just like Rac said it would. Simple, easy, just like using the BCR card.
