If there's a death in the family and you either have to leave sooner to go to the bereaved or not at all to somewhere else, the airlines make it tough as pulling teeth to get a change of flight or refund. Here's an article offering help: http://consumerist.com/2014/07/01/what- ... he-family/

Once in a blue moon Sr. Jazz posts a useful one  and this is a good topic for us as some of us travel very frequently and occasionally need to fudge dates...

I have a few death certificated of relatives ( my same surname) scanned into my computer on hand for this purpose. With a little savvy the dates of death, stamps, etc. can be manipulated so a relevant "copy" can be created to be sent in for the refund. Airline reps don't verify the information. Fraud? Dann right! Phuck the airlines and their fees they get enough of my dinero!

A part of the problem is no more "bereavement fares" for those with family medical or burial needs. It almost forces fraud to get what we should be offered freely.

The airline does claim no more "bereavement fares", but I think that's just a scare tactic, making consumers to jump thru hoops hoping most can't jump.

But I could be wrong; I usually am.

After re-reading the article, I see AA does offer a "nonrefundable travel voucher" but claims to require a death certificate.

Very similar, they also claim they no longer take "doctor excusses", but they still do. Had a trip planned last November but had emergency heart surgery. Sent in a statement from the doctor, & was given a voucher good for 1 year. I've rescheduled for this November.
