Thinking about a few days on the Nicoya peninsula during my July trip, maybe Puntarenas/Isla Tortuga/Montezuma/Cabo Blanco, something like that. Interested in the scenery and laid-back vibe. Also would like to surf there if the surfing is good for a beginner. And the taxi boat from Montezuma to Jaco looks cool.

The concern is logistical difficulties (rain, transport) and presence of young hipsters and yoga snobs. How would they view the middle aged solo traveler? Seems like the vibe would clash. Or perhaps I should do as the Romans do?

Thoughts?

Nicoya is worth seeing but much depends on your expectations, desires and abilities. I take it that this is your first trip to Costa Rica. Getting off the plane and finding your way around (solo traveler) would be a major undertaking. Your planning and Spanish would need to be exceptional. Most visitors either start with site-seeing tours or find someone to guide them. Surfing there is an option for a beginner. Young hipsters, yoga snobs who cares, not your job to impress them. They take you the way you are or get out of the way. The weather, expect daily afternoon showers and react to them. They usually last 30 to an hour. Good time to sit back and drink a beer.

You could also take the ferry from Puntarenas to the other side & get a ride to Montezuma and check out ST. Theresa and along there--good trip--surfing and partiers--you can find some p4p in MONTEZUMA

Thanks for the feedback. I've decided to save Nicoya for a later trip. You can find my tentative plan here:
