from what I have read so far, you appear to be an ideal candidate for the Del Rey experience on trip number one, night number one. Get a reservation at the Del Rey for at least your first night. When you're at the airport just tell the driver Hotel Del Rey, the all know the place. While you're checking in the hotel there will be many ladies checking you and you can check them out as well.
Get to the room, lock up your valuables in the safe, head back to the lobby, then to the back bar ( aka Blue Marlin and let the hunt begin. You will be the prey during this hunt.

Actually, it does - not only is it rude, it reinforces how dumb some of us are - also, famous story how some guys were in a Costa Rican bar, and used the term "hey we are looking for "TICAS", meaning whores - and a fight almost broke out - so its a term to avoid.

Its - somewhat - like the use of the word "oriental" - the preferred term is Asian, or calling a Chinese a "Chinaman" - a tica is simply a Costa Rican female

Not direct examples, but you get the idea.

As to your other point about does it matter how many times a person has been to Costa Rica - personally, I've been over 40 times, over the last 15+ years - and I'm still learning. But there is no substitute for experience.
