Sometimes it is hard to tell if it is dislike or they are just trying to earn a bit more cash. Good example was my search for some antibiotics the other day. Went into the largest chain drug store and ask for Amoxicillin, the #1 antibiotic in the world I believe. Have never had a problem finding it here. Well, this pharmacist claimed they didn't carry Amoxicillin but she could sell me a Z-Pack (for 5X the price). I politely told her no thank you and I'm sure I can find it elsewhere.
A few likely scenarios here...
1) Hates Gringos -- Your best bet is to say "thank you" and go elsewhere. You can't beat that one.
2) Upsell attempt -- Stick to your guns and demand your stated item or nothing.
3) Out of Stock and trying to sell you the next best thing that they have -- Use your Judgment.

I usually walk into any place like a pharmacy or anywhere that bargaining might be involved with a lollipop in my mouth. It gives off that perfect "I don't give a shit" vibe. I ask for amoxicillin, they say they'll sell me a Z-pack for 5X price. I just look them in the eye and suck on my lollipop for about 15 seconds, without saying a word. 9 times out of ten, they say "OR... we could sell you this amoxicillin over here."

I may have already posted this one... I bought a car this week. I had the whole deal hammered out, and was supposed to go to the car dealer's bank and deposit the money in the dealer's account. It did not work out that way. The next thing I know, the dealer, and my girlfriend and her entire family are telling me that I can go to this or that bank and do this and that to buy the car. My answer was "NO!" I don't do business like that. If this jackass wants to waste my time, he's going to be severely disappointed. I went to his bank and it did not work the way that he said it would. If he wants to sell the car, he can come over to my house and sell it to me right here, on my coffee table.
After several tirades from the guy and my girlfriend and her family about how it doesn't work that way in Costa Rica, I just sat back calmly and said "watch and learn." The next day, he drove the car right into the parking space in front of my house.
