Gentlemen,

True story happened last night at Sportsmens Lodge...I will copy and paste the report I received this morning from my Hotel Manager Manfred Hernandez....

Bill,

We had an issue in El Tigre room, the guest in that room demand to talk to you because the SL is not a secure place, he accused us to be responsible for stole around $700 in cash, passport, credits cards, etc. Priscilla called me and I talked to him over the phone from my house, he insisted to talk to you, so I came and we watched cameras together, only Doris (our maid) and one working girl that we identified went to the room, he insisted to call you or call the police.

I did call the police and they came but police wanted him to go to the OIJ and have someone coming to take some fingerprints and compare with our maid and the working girl, he asked me to check his backpack, so I went with Ballardo and we put gloves and we found everything in a blue bag belonging to the guest in another backpack.

The whole story took us around two hours specially since I had to get the best procedure since Mona Lisa hotel is been accused of the same insecurity problem with no solution and this guy wanted to ruined us in CRT.

At the end problem solve, I´ll give you more details tomorrow when I get here.

Good night.

Manfred Hernandez
Gerente General
Sportsmens Lodge

I am certainly and obviously not saying this may of been the case with Scubabum and The Mona Lisa, however as a process including viewing security cameras we ask for permission to check any guests room who has a similar claim as stated on this thread and what happened last night at SL.

Thanks,

Bill

I was quite the opposite in the way I handled my situation. I was very calm and 'matter of factly'. I never expected anyone to replace what I lost. I did expect someone to at least hear me besides the man who said "I'm just the beverage manager" with a shrug of his shoulders. If someone would have looked at video cameras, I would have been satisfied. Not happy, but that at least would have shown at least a little interest.

Anyone who doubts the meaning of life is 10% of what happens and 90% how you <or others> react should read the above because it proves it.

Guy has an incident, and he gets the reaction, in essence, "Not my job, sorry"

Really sorry that happened to you :)

I agree Bill has created a nice experience for guests and girls......I also think that almost all Bill's guests visit the del rey/key largo at some point in there stay.
I get it you hate the del rey but until something comes along that really competes with it that's where the majority of girls will work.

My points were simple - the HDR is not that great but the competition is worse

I confirm that Bill has done an excellent job, and deserves every bit of success he has achieved (its not easy to make a go of it in his business - anywhere - but he has and should be praised for what he achieved - period

My bitches against the HDR notwithstanding - I think its a shitty hotel, the last time the rooms were renovated and /or redecorated Jimmy Carter was in the Whitehouse (and not the one in Escazu :? :? )

Plus, I think they charge US prices for their food and drinks - their right to do so, as so many business catering to the gringo do.

But my main gripe is really with guys that never expand their horizons past the HDR, and the KL - some of these guys would have you believe they "know" Costa Rica - they don't - I think - hell, I know - that so much exists outside of the walls of the pink palace that more guys should experience.

I've talked to jerks that (let me say.....if you like the HDR, that's your right - what I'm talking about here are guys that know nothing, but think they do) swear by the place - its the only place to meet girls in San Jose - its great, on and on ad naseum - its the idea that some will never expand past the place - and that's OK - just STFU about how great it is, and how much you know about CR - that is the thing that gets me about the place.

I have been going to Costa Rica since you were knee high to a duck. (Actually I don't know how old you are, but I've been going for 23 years.)

I started out at the Del Rey and Key Largo but soon ventured into the old Zona Roja over by the Hotel Principe. Went into places over there that probably NO gringo had been. I certainly didn't see any when I went there. I went to all those places over there and even had a couple good times over there.

Went to most if not all of the massage parlors. Went to places that don't exist any more.

Yet I will tell you that there is no better place to pick up chicks than the Del Rey. Period. That's my opinion. I could go into WHY but this thread isn't supposed to be about this so I'll drop it here.

As to getting ripped off, it can happen anywhere at any hotel. I guess I've been lucky in Costa Rica because I've never been ripped off. If the place doesn't have a safe I have a good hiding place that has always worked for me and if I can't use it (for reasons I cannot say) then I'll figure out another good one. I have had up to $19,000 cash American in one of those safes at the Morazan! (That was out of necessity, not out of choice!)

One thing I wanted to note is that if someone had started a similar thread about the Sportsmen's Lodge it would have been deleted right away. Why is one about the Mona Lisa allowed to stand? Seems there is a double standard at work.

Without proof it's just hearsay, legally. I understand that the guy who started the thread is a stand up guy, sure about it and all but nevertheless anyone COULD get drunk or confused for some reason and think money was stolen when it wasn't or went to the bathroom when he thought he didn't or whatever. I don't think it's right to accuse any hotel of theft without some proof. It could be considered slander, no? IMHO.

You are right that "without proof it's just hearsay, legally". It also must be said that the Mona Lisa has not denied or challenged the OP regarding the validity of the accusation. So far I believe the OP.

For any of you with any doubts as to the OP's (Scubabum) honesty and being a guy always on top of things and his surroundings:

I have known Scubabum for quite a few years. I would say (IMHO) he is as honest a person as anyone could ever hope to meet. He is a very experienced monger (many years and many countries) and knows the game and the risks. He has a ball wherever he is, but he is always on top of things.

This is just my opinion and to some that may not mean much nor make it so, but I doubt if anyone who knows him would disagree with me. And I have on 3 occasions personally witnessed the total lack of concern for customer problems at the Mona Lisa.

Agree 100% on your opinion of Scubabum...a more honest and experienced monger doesn't exist. And I too have seen some 'lack of concern' shown at Mona Lisa. Recently had a client that had a lost bag (AA). He asked for some help for a local phone number for AA and was told to look it up himself. NO ONE was willing to take 2 minutes to help him out

I don't think that is the case. SL may be a major fav here (regarding or disregarding rumors), but they are fair game to threads about complaints. The real statement is, would anyone dare to post one?

My only issue with SL, is that the owner (that big guy) gives preferential treatment and special game-day seating privileges to some dude named "Bill" ... in huge block letters taped to the chair and tabletop!! I mean ... how dare he!!!

BD,

Fair assessment and honest post my man....The game day special seating placards are for Papa Bill, my father and his two girlfriends. He is 88 years old, but ready to talk to you about this the next time you are in town......

Wow those Pacsafe products sure have gone up in price. I bought a fanny pack 12 years ago and it needs replacing, and my back pack with a safe in it is great for the beach if you can find something to lock it to. I have used both when no safe was available or as a secondary place along with locking luggage, and they are great.

Two places I will never stay in again, Del Rey and Presidente, now added to my list is Mona Lisa.

Ha ha, ...don't get me started on Presidente, I had the misfortune of staying there once, the boss of our company paid for a group of us to go, and he liked Presidente because they had large suites, very luxurious, so we all had to stay there, he was paying.

I called and inquired about their chica rule, they said as long as she was wearing "respectable" clothes, they let them in. I brought one back wearing a mini skirt, not overly provocative, top covered her chest. They said no. I said I would go up to my room and bring a pair of sweatpants down and she can put them on outside (it was night) and then come in, the little runt said no, she must wear HER clothes...I am not a drinker but I was drunk that night and pissed, I let in on him and he called in the night manager, both of these shrimps were apx 5'4'', 130 to 140 lbs, even though I am in my 50's, I am a 6'0" tall 210 lb hot tempered ex joc, big and threatening to these little guys.

I ranted and raved and chewed them out for about 15 minutes, they were terrified but held their ground. I finally took her around the corner to that cheezy sleazy $10 an hour sh*t hole and released my tension...
I finally convinced the boss not to ask us to stay there ever again, we often come down in groups of 4 to 6 and stay at Del Rey or Dunn Inn, one day we'll try to stay at Sportsmans but NEVER AGAIN Presidente, and I've heard enough bad things about Mona Lisa to keep them off my list...

What baffles me in all this rock-solid discussion is, Where's Mgmt/Ownership of the place? I get institutional reticence in the face of withering criticism (aka "clamming up") but, jeez, somebody say something, if only "We are preparing our response." OK another thing--How bad (my word's "egregious"= outstandingly bad) does a Sponsor's behavior have to be be before CRT bucks publicly hold their feet to the fire?
NOTE: I am NOT trying to raise unnecessary sand, just asking a couple of questions.
