.......... Spirit has a flight into SJO, landing at 1 am.

Any of the regular monger hotels have issues with late check-in?

You may have an issue with checking in late at HLH at that hour. If it's the same (new?) guard on duty in December, assume the guy won't have a clue. Speak with Kim/Jason at great length prior to your trip, and reconfirm everything the day you travel.

As others have mentioned, Spirit will attempt to rip out both of your lungs. Try to save one. Their international baggage allowance is ONLY 40 lbs......... so be careful with weight. They'll charge you for carry-on. I view it as classic bait & switch. By the time you're done adding the additional $100 or $200 to the advertised price, you may not have saved much over the alternatives (if anything at all).

Good luck,

Bob

Kim and Jason are gone from Scores, sadly. But your advice is well taken. Thanks.

Sad - wished they could have made a go of it - Plus, Kim was hot - if their story was on CRT, I missed it - but I suspect it was the cause of all too many small business' - too much in expenses and not enough in revinues - and not enough working capital to support the business in its start up days. (And what, Dirty Jeff is still there   - seems like after a nuclear war, the only survivors will be cockroaches and Dirty Jeff.......)

On another subject........

I hate Spirit's business model and business philosophy - also I must state as forcefully as possible that you have to add up all the extras - like a reserved seat <sure you can roll the dice, but I don't want a middle seat, even on a 2.5 hour flight)> and their baggage policy - and see what you have. Often Spirit is NOT the least expensive option - I add $100 to the cost of a Spirit r/t for the baggage, seat, etc. as a matter of course.

The seats suck - like military intelegence, jumbo shrimp, and other oxymorons, Spirits "pre reclined seats" are awful.

But...and this is a huge but - I have had great luck with Spirit's on time proformance - both from FLL to SJO as well as to NYC - so I would recommend guys check them out for any flight to SJO THAT ORIGINATES IN FLL - I WOULD NEVER FLY THEM EXCEPT ON DIRECT FLIGHTS, AND MOSTLY ALL REQUIRE A STOP OR A CHANGE OF PLANES IN FT LAUDERDALE.

You're thinking about it the wrong way.. They are not the airline of extras. They are the airline of choice. Not everyone cares about where they sit. If they can pay less and get a random seat so be it, it's their CHOICE. If you're on a short weekend trip or maybe even a 3-4 day trip, you might be able to get away with just using the free bag underneath your seat. It's your CHOICE. It all depends what is more important you.

Personally, I've flown them half a dozen times with no problems. I only had one delay but that was during a long layover, so it didn't really matter. For me.. If a Spirit flight is > $100 cheaper then the closest competitor, I'll probably choose them otherwise it is not worth it.

I don't get where you see that Spirit is not the cheapest.. It really depends on the route, but usually they are. On a random dates from FLL to SJO, I see a Spirit flight for 227 vs 407 for Jetblue.. I'd jump on the Spirit flight in a heartbeat! From LGA to SJO Spirit is 387 vs 442 with Avianca. I'd probably have to go with Avianca.

another douchebag "I don't know what the Phuck I am talking about" comment from jazzblow :?

I fly spirit almost exclusively. I have their MC card which i use heavily and gets me 2 miles per dollar. I fly on miles two out of every three times i travel. Over superbowl I flew to MDE for 10k miles and 87 dollars. I normally NEVER pay over 300 R/T. I keep a bag in MDE so do not need to pay for bags. You learn to work the system and you can be happy with this airline.

As you say, its up to each individual - however, I'll stand 100% behind what I posted about them not always being the least expensive, especially if you check and/or carry on a bag, and if you want an assigned seat (truly, you have to add about $100 to the cost of the quoted fare to arrive at what you will be actually be paying) - and yes, I've flow them many times, especially when I can carry on a small bag and have zero issues with their on time preformance, something I can't in all honesty say about American. Frankly, sometimes they are and sometimes they are not the least expensive - all you prove with your example is that on the flight and date and time you used they were

I just flew JetBlue w/in the last 3 weeks to SJO - and I would gladly pay extra for their seat comfort, legroom, cabin service vs Spirit - how much extra - I honestly don't know, maybe $100 or so - I hate Spirits pre reclined seats that much - but that's my choice.

Simply pointing out that while I do fly them and expect I will in the future, while the quoted fare may be less than their competition, if you are carrying on a bag, and you want to assure yourself of not getting a middle seat all the way in the back of the plane, they may not be the least expensive option, when you factor in the extras most want.

Also, since many CRT's don't fly all that frequently, pointing out things you need to be aware of when you fly Spirit - Spirit often gets excoriated on this and other forums - and while I don't subscribe to that hate, I do think its worthwhile to point out things to be aware of when you fly them.

Jazzbo, you attempt to defend your many posts by saying they are informative. What is informative about that post?

So you're saying I always have to be a pillar of rectitude and can never have some old-fashioned bitch-slap fun? BTW, I don't need to "defend" myself; mere explanation suffices. Have a nice day.

They are not always the cheapest, but if you do a Kayak search, Spirit is consistently on the top or near the top. Of course when comparing prices, you need to add on what's important to YOU and use that as a basis. Even then, they come out cheaper more times than not. That's the beauty of it, sometimes you can find a dirt cheap flight. You don't need to pay for the seat you don't want, pay for crappy airline food, or to subsidize someone else's bag.

As Phoenix says, if you're a frequent traveler, you need to learn how to game their system. It's why I have a bag in MDE too. Even though I don't fly them that much anymore, because for me, their pricing to MDE from LGA is no longer worth it.

I fly spirit every time I go fll to sjo. only been delayed once going there on the red eye. pay for bags on line to save. if you plan to go often, get on the 9 dollar club. it will help a bit with bag costs. its a 2hr 50 min nonstop flight. I just get on the plane, bring my own munchies, ipod, jacket and that's about it. its a very easy flight. just expect absolutely nothing from them and remember the cost of the flight. I cant find a better price so to me, the get nothing system spirit has is fine and acceptable. cabs are easy. just get a red one and its 20-25 dollars to the del rey, Amistad, sportsmens. safe travels

The $9 fare club is garbage now.. There are hardly anymore $9 fares (at least for the places I go to). You only save like $18 each trip. You would need to travel at least 3-4 times with them to make it even worth it. After a period of cheap fares to Medellin, they have no more good deals.

yea, I know its not as good as it was but after you save the initial money on the flight (I actually just looked and there is a 20 dollar discount), you pay 10 dollars less per bag and that can add up. I agree, you must travel a few times to really save much but something is better then nothing.

You just need a spirit c.c. to get discount on bags,no need to be in $9 fare club..of course you pay an annual fee..
