Now we have to "Staff-proof" the room as well! The stress never ends!

Wow. If true, this is a real concern for future trips. I used to work for an Int. Organisation, and recall sending Diplomatic Pouches with a disposable numbered plastic seal. The seal was not meant to deter intrusion, only to leave no doubt that it had occurred. Wonder if there is something similar that one can use on a sealable pouch small enough to fit in a room safe.

Everything I have seen since the day they opened this hotel shows a total lack of concern for the guests from the owner(s) to the maids. Living here I do not stay in hotels here, but I do have a lot of friends who do and several have stayed in the Mona Lisa and EVERYONE has said "never again". From refusing to honor a reservation and price (guest had a copy of the confirmation he received from the hotel) to being told by an owner "Why don't you find another hotel" when the guest complained about no air-conditioning nor safe in the room after 4 days of telling the desk and management, to now this, a total lack of concern about thief in their hotel!!! I would never recommend this hotel to anyone!!

And what could be the best laid out bar/restaurant in the country (could replace the old News café) is a ghost town because of non existant service and terrible food.

Oh, and the friend who they refused to give the rate they had quoted him--when he got ready to check out they could not find any record of him being there so "NO CHARGE" for a week!!!

Great way to run a hotel, get repeat business, and make a profit!!!!

Yep the insiders very good at sniffing out the money wherever it hidden. Hid about $400 US in COP inbetween some study guides at Hotel de Pereira CO and they didn't rip it all but slipped out about $60 worth of COP so that I wouldn't "notice". Now I either lock in a luggage so that I know if they broke in or if they flat out stole the whole bag wud not be pretty.

Also check out the pac-safes at Corporate Travel Safety.com. Can hang those gems under the god-damn sink and make it even harder. Or place them locked inside the hotel safe.

"Lock moolah in your luggage? Just withdraw what you need for the day?"

Yup, pretty close to what I do. I do a quick accounting of my cash and stash also every day even if it protected. Best to spot a thief early on them whammo, pow, kapam.... :D :D :D

Getting cash off of your card costs $5 a shot , max out of the machine next to the elevator in the delrey $200 over the past 8 years never had a problem with it. I have had trips where I brought 3,000 and kept in the safe and worried about it the entire trip.

I stayed 4 nights at the mona lisa and when I checked out they treated me like a criminal, calling security and following me out to my taxi on the street ....worried that I didnt pay, place is phucked up , not surprised that something like this happened only that it took this long.

I expected that they would put the blame back on the gringo and use the out," did you bring a girl to the room" , when I got cleaned in jaco at the cocal that was the first question the front desk asked , after I said yes , then could care less , I will go to my grave knowing the guard was in on it .

After 41 trips , I keep my amount s of cash low and keep in my jeans, leave my pass port in the safe.

Does the hotel not have cameras in the hallway? Perhaps we need to start using hidden cameras ourselves.

There have been times in my travels over the years, where I thought I was short a few dollars in my hotel safe. I always blamed it on the alcohol or a bad memory. The smart thief takes a little and doesn't get too greedy.

Good idea...and then send to your phone. Any resident mavens got equipment, software or other ideas to share on this?
Following up on Bro Jester's mention: http://couponfollow.com/site/corporatetravelsafety.com << allegedly current discount coupon--includes company's Website at the top and in the bottom right of the ad.

ill be staying at the mona lise next month and was thinking of buying one of these locks http://www.amazon.com/Milockie, what room number did you have?

I just checked these out at Amazon. I think I'll buy one before my next trip to Thailand.
You just never know.
I'm not saying that it won't happen at these hotels, but when I stay at La Amistad and SL I have full confidence that if there ever is a problem Matt, Dan or Bill with get to the bottom of it and that's why these are the only Hotels I will stay at while I'm in San Jose.
I love the way these gentlemen do business and that's why they will always get my business.

Mona Lisa is not in my future..

Thanks for your posts guys. Unfortunately it turns out that it was $700 not $600 that was ripped. I cashed a lot of $ at the BCR in SJO so it was from Wed till Sat night before I went for more $ and noticed the rip. Also, changed rooms on Thursday due to the street side rooms being to loud to sleep.
I moved yesterday in with Crackerass. Nice apt. on the river in Guadalupe. A lot closer to the gulch than it sounds. Last night only 1455C for taxi from HDR. and can walk to Walmart.
