Holy Thursday and Good Friday at Easter, and Presidential election days traditionally were dry by law all over CR. You'll remember the yellow police tape blocking off bars and parts of grocery stores.

That all changed before last year and they let it be decided by the local governments, I think by Cantons, forgot.

I know last Easter was wide open in SJ, Jaco, and Quepos. I think some other areas chose to stay dry.

But this is the first presidential election since the new procedure has gone into effect. So, I presume the decision makers in any given region have made their decisions and probably will fall in line with the way they voted for their region for Holy Week. Feb is prime tourismo time.

And if I remember right, for elections, CR was dry from Sat to Mon. Been a long time since I thought about that so I am not positive.

But I have not seen anything in the press.

Anybody?

I doubt that any of the gulch gringo bar mainstays would press ahead with Superbowl festivities without the answer to this question. :?: :?

Yep, I forget about that being SuperBowl Sunday as well, but in the "dry" years, certain bars and restaurants would get around it by holding "private parties" which was legal if done legit.

Just saw this in Today's tico times, who's website underwent a major update 10 days ago, but they must have used the same IT guys as CRT because it's a disaster worse then what we went thru. Anyway, SJ police have announced they will not enforce the dry law next Sunday, and here's an excerpt about the rest of the towns that have decided one way or the other so far:

"Municipalities that the National Union of Local Governments said will enforce the dry law are Alajuelita, Cartago, Peñas Blancas, San Ramón, Aserrí, Dota, Poás, Corredores, Guácimo, San Ramón, Atenas, Upala and Los Chiles.

Escazú is among the 12 municipalities that has announced it will NOT enforce a dry law. The other municipalities that have stated they won’t apply the law are Desamparados,Tibás, León Cortes, Turrialba, La Cruz, Talamanca, Golfito, Garabito (ee-haw! that means Jaco will be flowing!), Parrita, Buenos Aires, Naranjo and now, San José.

Other cantons remain undecided on the issue. (Apparently, no word about Quepos yet which would probably be coming from Aguirre)

Conceivably, this will have the biggest effect on Gringos who live in dry law municipalities. In those cities, U.S. expats, the majority of whom aren’t enfranchised to vote, won’t be able to drink beer while watching the biggest U.S. sporting event of the year. Because Feb. 2 is, of course also, Super Bowl Sunday."

Anyway, if you are going to be in those dry areas, just stock up before hand.

It might be just Me but I would be more concerned about the NFL moving the Game to Monday Because of weather concerns.
