Hola fellow mongers,
I stayed at La Amistad December 6-10, and while I dislike hyperbole, I've never before had a more enjoyable stay at a hotel. I had the all-inclusive rate with a queen room, and it was perfect. For many reasons.
First, I like the all-inclusive rate. If I want a beer, I get a beer. Liquor, no problem. Food, server it up. I'm on vacation, and I don't want to track my living expenses. It adds an element of low-level stress that I'm just not interested in while I'm on vacation. If want some surf and turf, I pull the trigger. Fish? No problemo. Healthier options? La Amistad has better than most. So the all-inclusive rate fits the bill.
And the real kicker here is the staff, and it starts with one of the owners, Matt. Not only does he run the hotel, but ownership really fits his personality because he's a guy that loves to be out doing things. So he bought a van to facilitate. On Saturday, he took 10 of us down to Jaco. On the way, he showed us a really cool crocodile tour. When we arrived at the beach, he arranged a sweet horseback ride through the jungle for part of the group, and the rest of us trolled down the strip for a day. Feeling hungover the next day, Matt and I took about a 5-mile walk through town, and we sweated out the night's work while checking out San Jose. The walk ended with a visit to a sweet cheap eats place in the bowels of a shopping center. Not a place (or an experience) that I would have had all by my gringo lonesome. The next day, we went to the Alcazar, and my my did we have ourselves a time. He nearly killed my uncle (with me on the trip) by putting the hottest and wiggliest hellcat right on his lap (this is after we went out for some sweet sushi). My uncle emerged from the private rooms at the Alcazar with his hair plastered to his scalp: a sweaty satisfied mess. If another lady the next day had not befell me, the Alcazar stripper would have been the target of my sights the next night. Incredible. (but the one I sampled left me fulfilled with absolutely no regrets!)
As noteworthy as Matt's hospitality, was the group of men that stayed with me at La Amistad. As I walked down the stairs in the morning in haze of pu**y and alcohol, I was greeted by like-minded adventurers. Overall, I found the environment at the hotel very supportive and helpful. A great group of travellers for whom La Amistad serves as their Mecca. You can always strike up a conversation with anyone at the hotel, because if you think about it, we're all there for the same reasons. I dislike the term frat-house environment, rather La Amistad creates a pleasant environment for like-minded men who like to spend their time doing whatever they damn well please. 10 of us went to Jaco, about a 2-hour drive in Matt's van, and the drive was great. Lots of collaborative conversation about all things, especially women and fun.
I also liked that the hotel doesn't allow women to troll around. It's a great buffer zone, and if you feel the need late at night, then someone will point you in the right direction. It creates an atmosphere of safety and relaxation.
And there's the little things too. Matt buys his coffee from the guy whose coffee planatation is on the other side of the mountains, and it's the best cup of coffee you'll find in town. And he can show you where to buy your own to take home. It's right around the corner.
So check out La Amistad when you go. You'll have a great time.
