I looked hard but could not find an answer to this question: Why does the US government have a debt limit? It seems to exist mainly to ensure uncertainty and political wrangling.

not sure but i would guess a debt limit is there in an attempt to control the government from continuing to spend more than it brings in. not that they can't just change that whenever necessary.
why you would ask that question is another story. so its just a nuisance and politicians should just be able to take what they feel is necessary?

If you keep raising the debt limit what is the point of having one?

Checks and Balances.
Looks like people have forgotten that not long ago we raised the limit, and it didn't seem to have helped much. "Things will be better" they said, however here we are again. It is irresponsible to just raise the limit without a plan. So no money to pay our bills, how are we gonna pay for Obamacare? I a couple more years well be having this conversation again.

easy-peasy lemon squeezy--raise the limit on earnings subject to Social Security taxes. The current limit is $113K per year--everything above that is this-tax free. Make it dollar one to dollar last and "...from whatever source derived", and the money will flood the Federal coffers.

This limit, like mortgage interest deductiblity and corporate deductibility of healthcare premiums paid, was the result of a political deal, not rationality, and needs a fresh look with an eye towards revision.

yes increasing tax laws always work
how about a flat tax and eliminate the need
if everyone paid a larger tax on everything purchased the money flows
at least for a few years until they spend up to that limit

Come on, guys. Take your political discussions somewhere else. This kind of stuff doesn't belong on this board.

Another "Wanta Be Cop" It all started as a joke in the proper section, so take your badge and find a real violation of the law somewhere else.

The only thing that I want to know is whether this will negatively effect the exchange rate for my trip in November (and for my trip next January/March). I remember my first trip to Europe, sitting in my hotel room and watching the Euro jump every day in relation to the dollar. It was a real downer.

it will either have no effect, bad effect or a good effect, your guess will as good as mine. If I knew that ( or one else knows ) I be trading currency and make a enough to buy my own Caribbean Island and stock it with lots of play toys for when my friends come over

I called my credit card company the other day and asked for a credit increase. They told me we have to discuss my spending habits and income before they'd agree to an increase. I told them screw that, give me the increase THEN we can discuss how to reduce my debt, reduce my spending and increase my revenue. Needless to say, that didn't go over very well...

Got this from friend, a simplistic way to look at debt issue

The folks who are getting the free stuff don't like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

And the folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop.

And the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now... The people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So... The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff (53%) than paying for the free stuff (47%).

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded.
The reason?

The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.

The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 236 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff.

Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

I did not read this thread. I have not turned on the news for over a month now. I avoid any USA news at all, flipping right past it.

I also stopped watching the local Costa Rica news.

People get obsessed with all this trash. Life it too short.

Its been a great month.
