CR Futbol team to be fined for their fans drowning out US national anthem at the stadium last week. I don't how they can control 35,000 screamers.

Well, tonight in San Jose, the car horns have been blaring for hours since CR defeated Jamaica. Meanwhile, perhaps somebody can tell me about the wild celebration going on in the States after beating Mexico? Okay, obviously I'm joking.

Costa Rica and U.S. both win slots for the 2014 World Cup
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Both Costa Rica and the United States national soccer teams earned enough points Tuesday night to qualify for berths for the 2014 World Cup.

For Costa Rica, this is like winning the Superbowl and the World Series all on the same night.

Costa Rica did not qualify the way it expected. The Tico team battled hapless Jamaica to a 1-1 tie in Kingston. Then the team and the rest of the country had to await the outcome of the Panamá-Honduras match. The teams tied. Honduras still is in third place in the regional competition after Costa Rica.

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football sends three teams to the World Cup. The team in fourth place has to battle it out with a team similarly placed from another region.

The U.S. team scored two goals and held México scoreless to win its game in Columbus, Ohio. The U.S. team also benefited from the Honduras-Panamá tie.

The teams in the Central American and Caribbean Association
have two more games left. There is one Oct. 11 when Costa Rica plays Honduras and the United States plays Jamaica. Then Oct. 15, the United States plays Panamá and the Tico squad plays México.

México so far has won just a single game of the eight played. Jamaica has not won a game but has had four ties.

The qualifying was sweet for Costa Rica. In 2010 the team lost a World cup berth when it lost to the United States and then Honduras won its game.

What happens now is a major media blitz with product tie-ins, travel contests and all sorts of marketing in anticipation of the start of the World cup games in June.

Many Costa Rican fans will travel to Brazil, too.

Public employees were expecting President Laura Chinchilla to declare a holiday today because of the soccer team victory. The Consejo de Educación Vial announced Tuesday afternoon that those scheduled for a driving test today would have to sign up again if the president declared a holiday.

But it appears that she did not.

Not a great translation via google of today's La Nacion front page, but I read a couple of other CR papers today on FIFA formally investigating CR for incidents during their win last week which also covered this story.

One involved the drowning out of our national anthem by the fans as previously mentioned, no biggie. Heck, we drown out our national anthems in the NHL when the guy is singing, of course the difference is we are drowning out are own anthems.

Another involves a flop by their star Joel Campbell feigning he got kicked by Matt Bessler which the ref bought and it drew a yellow card. Shoot, CR ain't got nothing on US pro sports when it comes to flopping, especially in the NBA, and Urlacher now says the Bears did it to slow down a hurry up offense.

The last one is a little over the top, involving lasering the face of our captain.

I read that local Ticos were tossing eggs at the bus taking the team from the airport to their hotel-now that's a rude welcome!

This did happen........ many Tico`s laughed about it when seeing it on the local news, but most were embarrassed by it IMHO. I had many express shame and regret that just a few people did this and in many eyes representing Costa Ricans poorly.

Here's a 5 second clip of the alleged kick of Campbell by Bessler that lead to a yellow card and his disqualification from the Mexico game. Now I know why these soccer players wiggle around on the ground in apparent agonizing pain--it works. Campbell flopped, worse then flopped, faked a hit, and was crying in pain. Nobody touched him.

He's being investigated by FIFA for this Academy Award performance but I think they should focus on the Latino ref or ump or whatever they're called for calling a foul on something he did not see. Anti-gringo?

Another reason I say this is because the CR coach is now complaining the US should not have had a camera there. It was taken by an Independent photographer to cover the game by agreement (read the story). So to me that means Campbell choose an area where he thinks there is no camera when there was a friendly anti-gringo? referree near by. Paranoid thinking maybe.

That flop cost them $13,400, FIFA fine. And probably a loss of respect for him from the Int'l futbol players and fans.
