Good advice on an SUV, make it a large one, diesel powered. You may run into some deep streams to cross in Nicoya this time of year. For me I rather do the trip in dry season.
However, since you asked.....a small resort that is fantastic is located in Playa Coyote.
http://www.casacaletas.com/I would not suggest trying to reach it from Cobano, but rather there is another way in, further to the north which takes you through numerous cattle ranches. We did the trip in this way and returned by way of Cobano in May and encountered two streams at least 3 ft. deep. (I was wishing we had a winch on the front end but we made it OK) If you take the ferry from Puntarenes to Playa Naranjo there is a route that takes you to Playa Coyote passing the ranches and a few very shallow streams. A long ride from San Jose but worth it!
