Mona Lisa and La Amistad, both hotels offer free calling to USA. What number will the persons being called see on their caller ID?

Also when using a CR SIM, is there a way to mask the fact that I am calling from Costa Rica?

Thanks

When I use my Costa Rica sim from ICE to call someone in the USA it shows up on their phone as "Unavailable Number" I think that is standard for ICE.

Awesome.

Thanks Calhoun :)

Sounds like maybe both are using MagicJack. Ask them. If so it will be whatever area code and number they choose when they bought MagicJack, and I am almlost positve they only offer gringo numbers from somewhere in the US. If not, call your cell phone when you get there and you'll have your answer.

Cell phones--in CR they can set your SIM card or chip as they call it so that all of your calls are blocked when you buy your card. Seems like Ticos always block their calls. When my amigas call me in the US it pops up anonymous or unknown like they do when I am there. Or if you didn't have your CR sim carrier do that setting for you, your device ordinarily has that caller ID option. Will that hardware setting work on an international call? Don't know.

Better do a test run to a buddy to see.

I do know any text you send from there will show the phone number. I don't think there's a way to stop that, from there to here or from US to CR at least on AT&T---I talked to them about that, said there was no way to block it going into anothe counrty's fone system. And my amigas blocked phone numbers pop up on texts to me here. I forget if their texts do or don't down there. You'll find out 5 minutes after you give your number to one of them. They text for less then 1 penny every time they get a different thought in their brain.

As an aside, if you pull a girl back to your place, make sure she shuts her fone off.

Thanks Gersen. Oh! they use magic Jack and I thought it was some high-tech contraption used by international hotels.

I will not be soliciting any Ticas for business. I am a monger in remission and happily married. Going there with the ba*y and wife for dentist and vacation. (I'll be working remotely while they vacation)

I have called the Dunn Inn from my majic jack to their 512 area code majic jack which would be the Austin,Tx area code location. I would think your MJ # would show on your home or local phone when someone answers.

I always use the vonage app on my phone and call. It costs nothing if you have vonage already. Also, you can just pretend the signal is shitty in your location... so your are using the hotel internet. Works pretty well for me. I always claim shitty reception all the time 24/7 365 days a year to set it up for my "trips"

Hochaser You make a very good point. In my case, however, the bad connection excuse will not work. I manage 5-6 global projects at any given time. Most of my work is remote with occasional office presence. I have been provided with an IP based Cisco phone that works pretty well. It is Two to three times a day when my initiating of the call has to be clear and sometimes for 15-30 minute duration. That happens when I am not near the PC/VOIP phone and must call. Bad connection excuse will only hurt me in the long run. I do see it working rather well for other brother mongers though.

I have come long ways in overcoming this phone issue. All it took was for me to turn my cellphone on when overseas (CR) and the callers knew immediately due to the the difference in the ring. Now, I never turn my cellphone on when I am traveling. I just let everyone go to Google voice and call them back immediately upon seeing the email transcript or better yet let the callers from work call me on my VOIP when I am in-front my PC.

Lolly

I would love to have the other haf of this problem fixed. I can use Spooftel and that allows me to use any number I want as my source for outgoing calls from my phone. Great. The problem is masking incoming calls to your phone. I don't know of any way to make it ring like it's in North America. People calling get the announcements that they're connecting through so-and-so local phone network which of course gives your location away too.

THX Shadowman. I'll be signing up for spooftel. Just want to doublecheck that I'll able to call using my ICE SIM to USA and have my number spoofed as the local ATT number? I am hoping that the call quality does not get impaired using spooftel..

For incoming calls, I plan on using the softphone from Cisco (employer provided) and let the personal calls go straight into my voice-mail giving me caller ID (and transcript through Google) voice to call back. I know this is lame but the only other way was to use Phone.com and that was way to complicated for me to even get started.

Spooftel works a treat for outgoing calls. Use any phone you like, even your regular phone. You can input any number you like (and pick the name display) and that's what will show up for the person you call.

Now, if any one has a way to mask the incoming calls to make it sound like a North American network I'm 100% all ears.
