Random question - has anyone tried streaming video (netflix) using wifi at Amistad? Wondering if it's fast enough. Not even sure it works outside the States, but thought I'd ask.

I use it all the time but i do believe they block certain movies unless you have sling box.

Yes, I do it all the time when I stay at Amistad.

But you won't be able to stream Netflix with a US account from an IP address outside of the US, UNLESS you use a VPN.

I read that as well. Looks like there are a lot of VPN options designed to get around that sort of thing. Thanks for confirming.

FYI: I use the VPN Astrill and have had great service. They have a free trial you could use while you are here.

Who is "they"? The Amistad ISP?

If you have your own ISP, like at a house or apartment, can you get netflix? Hulu? Etc?

I live in Costa Rica and have a Netflix account. It works fine, but you do not get the same selection of movies, tv shows, etc you get in the states. I am not using VPN just an internet connection in Costa Rica.

Seabreeze mentioned the Astrill VPN (virtual private network): Here's more: https://www.astrill.com/
Here are others from Download.com http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.ht ... %3DWindows

I use HotSpot Shield, the Download.com-recommended VPN. Elite version (ad-free and faster) costs $5/ month or $30/year. Either, as the review says, can get you around censorship or other controls:

As to the OP's question: I couldn't find a WiFi speed tester relevant to CR; here's a good one for elsewhere in Latin America including Panama, Nicaragua and Colombia. Nothing to download, cuz it works off their site:
