Air Canada announces new discount airline brand with flights to Costa Rica

December 20th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Air Canada announced the launch of its new, inexpensive leisure travel airline brand, “Rouge,” which will begin service in July 2013 and will provide service to both the San Jose and Liberia airports in Costa Rica, departing from Toronto, Canada.

“With the introduction of Air Canada Rouge, the company enters the growing leisure travel market,” Ben Smith, executive vice president of the airline, said in a statement.

As part of a special introductory rate, flights to Costa Rica will begin at just $389, according to the statement.

Air Canada currently operates one non-stop flight per week to Costa Rica.

$389 is a great fare from Toronto. Nice that AC has nonstop flights.

Air Canada right now has 2 non stop flights to SJO per week, Saturday and Wednesday but they can be 40% more than Lacsa which has one short stop over.

Another advantage with Taca/Lacsa, they have daily departures from YYZ-SAL-SJO. The flight is only 1 hr. longer than the direct flight.

cheers,
Attila

$389 + tax? I'm curious as prices are suppose to be "all-in" now.
If its + tax, then that's pretty much what it would cost on a normal day.

The article says it is a "promotional" fare. That usually indicates it is for a very limited time and may only include a few seats on each flight during that time period. I would suspect that it the case here and the $389.00 is all in.

Air Canada consistently has the highest fares of all airline options we have. They are always my last choice. One of the ways "Rouge" plans on offering lower fares is adding seats by decreasing seat size and legroom. The seats in cattle car are already too small !! Competition is always good though, and maybe this will drive down the prices.

Nice. Spirit, Canadian-style, eh.

ID, what Jmac is referring to is a recent change in the law requiring ads to show the price complete with taxes & fees. The practice prior to this was to advertise a very low fare, then tack on the fees in an almost b & s type scam.

It would have to be significantly cheaper for me to switch from Delta....plus, I like the duty free in Atlanta.

I was checking the Air Canada website. I notice Air Canada Rouge is starting their flights in July. I think they fly to SJO on Tuesdays and Fridays. Seems the best fares are if you fly out on Tuesday and return on Tuesday. Direct flight would cost between $690-750 return.

cheers,
Attila

Well, I booked LACSA nonstop for August holiday weekend for $680. If that's AC's version of "competition", & it actually might be, it's not going to be worthwhile.
