Not exactly walking distance but:

Budget
San José - Paseo Colón

Open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Sunday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Phone: (506) 2255-4240
Fax: (506) 2255-4966
Address:
Corner of 30th Street and Paseo Colón. Across from INA Technical Institute.

Also, try calling the reception for Hotel La Amistad. They have a rental car company who works with them and they'll pick you up wherever you happen to be.

Thanks for the help, anyone have positive experiences any of these? What do they charge? I am only finding 300 for a 4WD for a week.

$300.00 sounds fair for a 4WD. I paid $180.00 for a week with Hertz for a small car but it did the job.
Unlimited miles. Free van from SJO.

Note: Not the same company as Hertz in the USA.

No hassle when I returned it. Some of the places in CR are known to blame you for stuff you did not do to the car. Make sure you do a good walk around of the vehicle before you take possession of it. They tried to give me a dirty car and I made them was it before it took it as the dirt will hide scratches. Overall a good experience.

Your debit card and cash are not any help. The amount of money you need on your card depends on how much insurance you buy. I take the minimum and Budget wants $1500 on the card. Long story but go Budget.

I had Budget try the "old ice pick in the tire" before I left, have two cars follow me, and try to rip me trick a few years back. Long story short, I raised hell with them for an hour--they even wanted me to pay for the wrecked tire-- SKIP Budget

Yea, it surprised me also, as I had rented from them for several years, both in SJ and Jaco. Maybe it was different management. They also said that they couldn't do the deal I had arranged online for the car and the insurance. Luckily, I made a copy of all the paperwork and argued with them for 10 minutes to honor their car deal. Next was the insurance issue, I wanted complete coverage, which at that time consisted of 3 levels of insurance. They said they could only do 2--another 20 minute exchange, until they figured they could give me what I wanted. And I still remember the guy who was last around my car before we left the place--when I came back yelling and screaming at them after the incident--he went to the back of the garage, kinda hiding with a sheepish look on his face.
Never again Budget

I hope you beefed on them. If you rented on line thru Budget in the US, Budget US is on the hook.

Whatever you decide I highly recommend you STAY AWAY from Budget. They will steal your money given the slightest opportunity. They tried to rip me off for $1,400 (they charged my CC) after I had left SJ for a miniscule chip on the windshield (probably caused by a pebble) which you needed a magnifying glass to see. When I returned the vehicle we debated whether it was there before I rented the car or not and the guy said "no big deal" not to worry about it. A month later I get my CC bill and they want to charge me $1400 to replace the entire windshield. Almost 5 months of back and forth letters of disputes with Budget Headquarterds USA but eventually they removed the charge. Have always had good luck with Dollar.
