Travel light when you can

A bag is just one more thing to keep track of... here one minute gone the next!

A back pack or a grocery bag are what I use if need be...

As a test bring a cheap umbrella and see how fast it is gone

A couple of skins ID and the money you plan to loose  is all you need

Admin 3 note the helpful post

Special thanks to Nhhank for proving helpful and informative advice to the new guy. LAdiablo's comment about the vibrator is also a good one. I recommend the smaller variety that take AAA or AA rechargeable batteries. Some of the girls like to charge extra or may be reluctant to play with the pocket rocket, but I am a big fan of warming them up when possible.

Otherwise, be sure to leave your white tube socks, shorts and baseball cap at home. Chances are you are going to get marked as a tourist, but it helps when you less enthusiastically play the part.

Wear, bring and carry what you want. I won't matter if you have white socks and sandals, shorts and baseball cap. Take a fanny pack if you want. Your gringoness will and can be spotted from space. Rule #1 have fun.

I could not agree more, expect for that dude who wore the mickey mouse hat around San Jose for years. That was a little odd.

I tried "blending in" my first couple of trips and everyplace I went locals said hello not hola even when I didn't say a word. Then I just said F it and started wearing shorts, t shirts, baseball caps and Teva's.

On a serious note, I like to carry a dummy wallet with a copy of my passport, room key, atm card, and about $200 worth of colones, a pack of gum (plan to share it with the chicas), condoms (the ones the girls have suck), and a small bottle of lube (a surprising amount of girls don't have this). I can fit all of this in my pockets.

Unless you look latino, you aren't going to blend in with the locals.

Then there's "TV Man". Seen him yet usually out by the airport? Oh ya, he's something.

What stuff are you referring to? All you need is your wallet (money, passport copy) and a condom.

I have my hair shaved on the sides and spiked a mile high on top. I wear Hollister T-Shirts and jeans. I blend in well.

I'm not worried about my 'gringo-ness' ... but I don't want to look too odd among the 'other gringos'. I bought a small backpack. I am hoping for a walking tour of the MPs ... I like to wander about in daylight and snap pics.
As for attire, I was aiming for lederhosen, fishnets and a swimmers cap, though your comments have made me rethink the swimmers cap. I'll grow a mullet instead.

Thanks to all.

Even if you look or are latino they can spot you. Trust me I have witnessed it.

what I have done for years is:

1) MP - I use fanny-pac with supplies (k-y - extra rain coats - small propina ( us dollars) -

2) mas por menos - walk from hotel to store - check backpack @ counter - shop - fill backpack - pay cab for return to hotel

3) shopping for fruits and vegs across from Dr. Chens' - or buying small sht @ tienda use backpack - always take taxi back to hotel...never walk back - think safety

4) strolling central ave. - use med. size change purse to hold photo copy of pp - less then 20,000 col. in cash - always make sure I have small change from front desk @ hotel front desk. never take change off street if can help it.

I always dress down - never wear bright new ultra white sneakers - or flashy clothes - like to be low-key - no watch - no jewelry - when I use the backpack - I always sck it up and pay the taxi (kills me -but think safety) ... you are no more of a mark in CR then you are a mark in Miami - the rules are the same - being aware of your surroundings and never just assuming is your best bet.

Bud, I live 20 minutes from Miami and I wouldn't be caught dead there for nutin'. I glow in the dark in Miami ... you can spot me a mile off the coast. At least there I can carry my own defense. In CR I am unarmed.
Still, I plan to be safe. I am planning to stick to the usual gringo routes, and stay within helping distance to others. I am adventurous ... but not stupid.

Oh, and I can't do the fanny pack thing. It just doesn't work for me ... but I'm sure you look 'sporting' in it!
