Also the "view new posts" function is still screwy.
I found Nhhank's post practical, helpful, complimentary and thoughtful. Hope you're happy Mucho Gusto :? - viewtopic.php?f=25&t=43493

Let's give the new Admin a chance. But if Admin is going to effect any positive changes, he is going to have to do it with "hands on"... not by proclamation... and with the support of the membership.

I hear you BlueDevil. I am here, I am listening and every move, improvement and action I am taking is a direct result of member requests and suggestions.

Thank you for giving me a chance instead of lashing out. You are a gentleman.

I agree with Bluedevil. Their is always a learning curve. Let's chill and give The Admin slack. He will be effective and he has ears.

I have been a member of this board since it's inception. Believe I was the seventh member to sign up. I have to say that the biggest difference I have seen is the commercialization of the site. Before, maybe 20% was about commercial enterprises and advertising and 80% about the forum and trip reports and the photo gallery. I believe that it has now reversed where the site is 80% about commercial enterprises and 20% about the forum, etc.

I understand perfectly why this was done as trying to provide "lifetime membership" benefits at the price that was set and the need to constantly sign up new members to pay for the old timers like me probably cannot be a successful model.

Think about it this way, how many other commercial sites are available concerning Costa Rica that does NOT have a forum at all. The forum clearly takes hours and hours to manage where, if the forum is minimized like it seems to have been, the time could be used to promote advertisements and other more lucrative part of a website.

Whether right or wrong, cleaning up this website from the mainly mongering site gives it a better chance to survive in the future especially if Costa Rica moves away from the kind of mongering we have enjoyed and loved. Can any body really say that mongering in Costa Rica is even close to what it was years ago. What will it be like in ten more years? If places like Help in Rio can be closed, certainly places like the Del Rey can go away.

Just my humble thoughts.

Have a Great Day,

Dave

After much debate the decision has been made to provide better moderation of the forum. A new set of rules have been posted, which we hope will ensure civil discourse and protect the value to the forum for our members.

I have been appointed to enforce these rules. I can assure you the recent decision to ban a lifetime member was not one we took lightly, but personal attacks will not be tolerated and no one is above the rules.

In the past members have complained of lax enforcement, among an elite group of rule breakers. I can assure you I am not a member of that club, and will execute my duties as moderator in an objective and effective manner.

I encourage any forum member who observes a rule violation to report it promptly, using the Report This Post (exclamation mark) at the bottom of the message. Although I will actively police the forums for rule violations, I may miss something so please do not hesitate to flag.

When I was many years younger, I used to get on those old-style forum sites like the ones that Genie ran. Many of them would have a topic like "Hotels and Transportation (unmoderated)" and then another named "Hotels and Transportation (moderated)". A user could post to the first and it would pop up instantly, or post to the second and wait for it to be approved by a moderator. Also, the moderator could copy a post from the unmoderated topic to the moderated one.

Not sure if the site has enough admins with time, or maybe volunteers to moderate a topic. But it worked OK back then. Nobody could really complain because you could read the edited or unedited version.

yes i agree there was an elite group of guys that got a pass. if i might suggest a "village of the banned" thread to let the rest of us know who was banned and why. works as a decent deterrent on other boards and the ultimate goal is to keep posters around i would think.

This is an excellent point. Actually, in the future I will be editing posts in place to remove the personal attacks with a notice of the edit and the the banning of poster. We believe this will be more effective than deleting posts, which will only occur in the case of spam or content that violates the law.

trolls are those who past inflammatory comments with the sole purpose of engaging members in heated argument or to piss people off.

I'm guessing that assmeg is much like asshat or assclown, but MH can correct me if I'm wrong there.

if i was going by this thread my guess is NHhank got a time out. just noticing his post was deleted.
i guess his comments were a bit too strident.
i think he meant well and imo adds to the place, but then again its not my board.
