OK, To be serious, I lived here from 2007 thru 2009 on an $1800 mo income.

Shared beautiful 2/2 w washer, dryer, dishwasher in Escazu, apx $400 mo (elec, cable included). If you can find a room mate you can get along with, substantial savings.

I mostly stayed away from tourist restaurants, ate at fabulous tico soda places and cooked my own food, maybe $300 mo.

chose not to get a car, buses and cabs maybe $100 mo.

$200 mo savings to cover my 3 day required getaway every 90 days

I'm old school, cleaned my own apartment.

Puta expenses $600 to 800 month, I would hit a lot of bargain mp's on Paseo Colon, refused to pay cien in those old days so averaged 2 to 3 sessions per week.

Never TOUCHED my savings the entire 2 years !!!

The overburdened U.S. massive and rapidly growing debt will quite possibly collapse us into a monster depression making the great depression look like a 5 minute time out for a mischievous K*D. Our politicians can't agree on how to handle a "cut" of 2% of the GROWTH of federal spending. The European Union is collapsing all over itself and Socialistic states like Cypress, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy will start imploding soon.

The Socialist mentality of Europe that we Americans have fought to avoid since our inception has taken hold here in the USA quite possibly never to disappear. We are in deep doo doo, as an ancient Roman senator once said, ''democracy cannot work, the people keep voting in corrupt politicians who keep pandering to their unsustainable demands, it HAS TO eventually collapse the society."

Already several large cities in California have declared BK, Detroit is spiraling out of control to hell as well as some other northeastern cities who have promised exponentially exploding monster pensions and benefits to gov employees. One Northeaster city cannot pay the police and firemen their promised pensions, basically offered them pennies on the dollar to shut up and go away while paying current city officials 6 figure incomes. It's about to get ugly.

Think you're safe if you have fat savings ? It's all electronic voo doo that can go away in an instant or be confiscated by a desperate corrupt government. When the world economy starts to implode and resources are being fought over, we get World wars. This upcoming one will pit terrorist nations with Nukes against the so called civilized world.

G*d save you ? Unlikely, he's going to be pissed at all of us justifiably so and he'll allow us to tear each other apart. Us old folks ? We're going down first...

I'd rather go to the Gulch and give all of my hard assets to the chicas (for services rendered) rather than go through all of that drama.

Hi Rac,

I concur ! I've been at this since 2003 and lived here for 2 years, I can count on my fingers the number of putas I had spend the night and there was only one I knew, liked and trusted enough to take away on a Mt. Arenal getaway weekend...

Give them all of your "HARD" assets...and your "LIQUID" assets, too...

I'm feeding 5 people. However, yes I spend roughly $400 per week in groceries. We have tried hundreds of ways to economize this by shopping at pricesmart, using the open air market, buying in bulk. Unless you live on rice and beans, food in Costa Rica is equally expensive to the US.
