I have an unlocked Iphone and I have switched to Movistar prepaid. The rates are the same, but their Internet service is much better. I have also had better results with Claro, but went with Movistar because it seems to have better coverage downtown. My opinion is based on weeks of testing all three services.

Another problem I have had with ICE is that you can not "cancel" the Internet service on prepaid lines. You sign up once for it, and basically you are stuck forever with Internet service. You are supposed to be able to order Internet access on a day by day basis with the prepaid, which is a big deal if you don not get out that much.

Daily Internet access on Claro and Movistar is 300 colones per day. You send text messages to activate and deactivate the service. Claro requires you to deactivate once subscribed, but Movistar does not automatically renew.

There is a Claro store in the Gran Hotel by the theatre, and a Moviestar on the other side of the park from the Del Rey, next to where the Nashville bar used to be. There is also a Movistar by the central post office. You just need your phone, passport and $5.

Although internet is always available through ICE/Kolbi on a per minute (The per minute rate is only ¢0.33) you can also sign up for different short term plans which are activated in the manner like Claro and Movistar. For instance it used to be 100 colones for daily internet access. It appears that is going to or went up to 200 colones per day. Here is the link to the prepaid codes for ICE/Kolbi.

I don't think cost is the issue with the prepaid plans. I agree the coverage and speed sucks but have heard that all the companies currently use the same towers? It is good there are now other companies providing service. Thank you, I will definitely look into Moviestar as data access is most important to me while visiting.

iPhone 4 is available from I.C.E. for free!

You just have to sign away your first born Ch*ld, show certified proof of income, and sign up for a data package for 24 months, and it is free. After all the paperwork is ready the attendant then goes to the back room to get your new phone (and no you cannot keep your old number, you have to get a new one... and they don't care if you have had the same number for many years of living in Costa Rica). The attendant them comes back and says thank you for waiting in line for three hours and now that you have filled out all the paperwork, I am sorry we are out of phones.... come back in 22 days.
Happened to me on Wednesday morning!

Lol, sorrry- better you than me. I just bought an AT&T Samsung Galaxy III off Ebay. No line to wait in. I think this will work ?

I recently returned from CR. I used my unlocked iPhone 4s and purchased a Kolbi card in the SJO airport. I charged the card with 10000 colones. The phone worked great for internet, text, and local service.

I unlocked my phone using Fusion Unlock. I did on ebay.com for $2. Yes, $2.

As mentioned previously, I will have to recharge within 120 days of the date of purchase from Kolbi to maintain the phone number.

I can confirm that was true a few years ago, but last time I checked you can now keep the same number indefinitely (well, at least longer than 120 days) as long as you have an active balance (i.e "saldo").

If they've changed the policy again please let us know.

There are countless ways to recharge online.. Google "topup". I always do this rather than trying to get a recharge card. Most places add minutes directly to your phone now. I don't like to add to much because once your data plan runs out, it starts soaking up your minutes really fast!

Seems like a cool site, but I noticed only the Claro logo--will it work for the other carriers in CR like Kolbi?--and does PopUp charge your cc a service fee?

Seems like they keep changing their policy. Recharge went from 90 to 120 to save your number but my understanding now is it will go to inactive on 121 even if you still have a balance, but that if you have a balance and recharge within the next 29, everything is on again. Not positive.

I don't take the chance, my CR # is important to me, so I either calender myself to recharge on line via MasterPago every 90 or have mi amiga do it.

I'm not sure what site you are looking at. Topup is a generic for loading prepaid phones online.. If there is no logo on the site most likely it will not work. You can enter your number and it will let you know before charging you.. maybe google "topup kolbi." There is no service fee but your cc might charge you an international conversion fee if the sight is offshore.

I was looking at topup.com. Masterpago.com works well for me with my Kolbi account and there's no service charge other then CR tax. Plus, I get a receipt with the $amt and the tel number that was credited and a reference # for the transaction should something go amiss and I need to call ICE.
