Maybe you should go back to spelling class. Both ax and axe are acceptable with the same meaning. In fact, Webster's College dictionary does not even list axe, only ax.

I wish I experienced this customer loyalty from Matt, but I never did so I took my business elsewhere. Of course Rudy and Carlos are some of the best staff in all of Barrio Amon!

I am curious *******, I respect most of what your saying but how do you feel about the owner of the Amistad? Do you think he shows a genuine concern for his guests and imparts the feeling that your business is appreciated. Just want your opinion on that topic. Thanks.

My honest opinion is that Matt's a bitter pill that could curdle milk with his scowl.

That being said, there isn't anyone who works harder to care for his guests. From showing guys around, to making sure a brand of sheets is still soft after being washed. Matt has a genuine loyalty to his guests that drives the amount of repeat business he has.

i would say thats a pretty straight forward honest assessment. anything i didn't like about matt or his style i have said to his face so i don't need to extrapolate on that opinion on this board. it is what it is as he's been known to say on occasion.

Why would a customer have to be put in a position like that in the first place, to have to confront the owner of a business in any regard? I run a business as well, and if I treated my customers in that manner I would not be in business for 15 years with repeat customers as I have. Anyway, the bottom line is this is a competitive market, I come to SJO for fun and R&R and no problem in finding a property that suits my needs.

I love the Dunn Inn. While I stayed at Mona Lisa, I went over to Dunn every morning for breakfast. Those girls are very sweet and always take good care of me and make a great breakfast.

Or, in the pronounced form, it could also mean to ask a question - by someone with a poor command of the english language, that is  - I've always seen it spelled "ax" fwiw.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, and the OP stated that's just what his post contained; personally, I'll make up my own mind, and one of his least favorites I like - a lot - what is interesting is people stay at hotels for many reasons that are important to them, and might not be apparent to someone else.

You can ascribe "wrongness" to his statements - for you and your needs - but its only his opinion, something he made very clear - I don't think he's right in everything he wrote, but do think he has the right to express his opinon, and as a resident of Costa Rica, plugged into the "scene" who has stayed at the places described, I would give his comments some weight - but at the end of the day, I am going to make up my own mind.

Because I believe in backing up statements I make, I'll give one example - Prior to the smoking ban, I would never stay at the Freebird, because of their policies restricting cigars - that was a deal killer - for me - the average guy would not feel as strongly.

Again, I think informed opinions can be valuable (hell where would we be w/out res't and movie reviews   :) ) but like in another category, my 10 could be your 6 or 7

I also think the "worship" some places on CRT enjoy can go overboard (not just talking hotels, either), and the "YMMV" phrase applies very strongly to hotels as well as girls :)

not my style either. and we can always vote with our feet. there is no reason why but i was just agreeing with the assessment. you might not get along w matt and he might piss you off still you have to respect his ability to take that hotel to the level it is at.
i think i told matt to Phuck off the first day i met him. but i still consider his hotel and restaurant a nice place to chill on occasion. i don't tend to take too much personally i guess and neither does he. i guess its a big city/thick skin thing.

He stuck his neck out and deserves credit. Probably should have left the "rankings" issue out and just summarized, pretty tough to rank the top 4 or 5. Everyone has their likes\bias\comfort level\quirks--mine is noise.

Hard to put Armistad on top of them all, even harder to put HLH above a few of the ones he did like SL, especially in view of recent HLH postings including roach infestation (10 in 1 day one guy posted) and other issues.

I didn't view that as grinding his axe as much as I did an inherent bias, consciously or subconsciously.

Anyway, he wasn't that far off on a majority, just the rankings, and he didn't include the noise factor on most, which would have upgraded Sleep INN which is not "over priced" at $85 when you include the free r/t shuttle and breakfast, and other amenities. True, the chica fee is bad but some guys pay $70 airport r/t. That's two girls right there. And a modern, American style hotel, solid construction. There's others on the higher end of the list that you spend more then $85 per night on and not quiet, a premium for me in the gulch, not so important to others. But, you see, there's my bias.

Big City Thick Skin? I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY. So I am not sure I understand what you mean by the comment. Anyhow, the bottom line is, why should any customer want to deal with any kind of negative vibe from the ownership of a business they are patronizing? Most of us work hard for our leisure dollars to give it over to a business owner with a bad atitude towards customers. What am I missing?

Zun,

I've stayed at LA probably 30 times & never have run into this. Not saying it didn't happen to you, just that I've never experienced it. As someone else posted, YMMV applies to hotels as it does with chicas. Personally, when I stayed at HLH, I thought it was a cesspool & would never even consider staying there again....I certainly wouldn't rank it in the top 5 hotels in the Gulch.

Quite possible.....

However I have always known this site to be a free exchange of information among Gentlemen. However full disclosure might be a good idea for objective reading.

Was wondering about that, so when he says "competitor’s headquarters" is he affiliated with Hotel Little Havana? (Like I need another reason to not waste a dollar there  )

Full disclosure would be a damn phucking good idea at this point. There are probably noobs reading this post thinking they have some inside info on where to stay. jesus.

******* runs a website that competes with CRT. He is quite clear that he has animosity towards CRT and Sportsmen's Lodge. Let me say that again, ******* is VERY CLEAR about his animosity towards CRT and Sportsmen's Lodge.

SL is EASILY the best place to stay in San Jose....my opinion...and I've been doing this shit VERY regularly for 5 years running.

And Dunn Inn is ....*cough* Dunn Inn. That's their goddamned name. Not some other pejorative term for the hotel. They are called Dunn Inn and that is how you will find them on a search of this site, or in a Google search.

The OP is misleading...at best.

At the end of the day, I know how to have a good time in CR. No bullshit post ....no character attacks.... No LAME ASS posturing makes a damn bit of difference when you are in CR...sipping a beer at your favorite establishment, and having the time of your life.

I find it hard to want to even post on this site when I run into the shit I run into here. The REALITY of CR is so much different...so easy, so refreshing...compared to the nonsense that, from time to time, gets posted here.
