Tiger Airways in Asia.

They tack on fees for everything, inccluding $32 to book a ticket on THEIR website. Every seat has a price on it.

Then, you have to go inperson to their counter to buy a ticket without any charges? :?

Krico,

It's not the getting there you have to worry about on Spirit. It's the getting back! I fly them a lot and get stranded 1 out of 5 times. Most of the time you are stranded will be spent in the airport trying to get on another flight. And don't try to do it yourself online. That can result in the cancellation of your currently screwed up itinerary and buying new tickets. I still fly them because its pretty much half the price of the other airlines and I like the red eye flights.

I've flown Spirit quite a few times (however, I can go from FLL to SJO direct - I would not fly them if I had to change planes or make connections) - I don't think they are always going to be the cheapest alternative, and I hate their business philosophy, customer service (an oxymoron if there ever was one  - you speak to Gupta in Bombay......who while well meaning, cannot do jack shit to help you - ever - plus you have to endure his accent  ), their totally phucked up frequent flyer program, as well as the way they seem to treat their employees (which results in shitty customer service to me)

However........

I have never had them cancel at the last min. like AA once did, costing me a day, nor lose my bag for 2 days like Taca did on this last trip a week or so ago

I have never had a problem with their flights - either to CR or to NY or Chicago - just want to report my experiences.

Yeah Asian budget carriers are nothing like 5 years ago. Use to be able to do AC to Bkk for 100 round trip and basically have your choice of seats and what not. Now it's like having a 12 hour layover. You may as well spend the money on the better flight because all the costs equal out to more

i agree with Scuba 1 on Spirit. It sums up the pros and cons of that Airline.

Tiger Airways is owned by the same parent company as Spirit Airlines. Thats why. Its not a coincidence they operate the same. Its by design. The owners are INDIGO Capital. Sad.

Well boys...I hate to admit it but you were right. I am writing this missive from the Detroit airport instead of from my warm bed...maybe we will get a new plane in a few hours. Of course all of the restaurants are closed at this hour. I am officially applying for membership in the Spirit Sucks Club.

Crap happens <or can happen> on any airline, even private charters - last trip to CR, literally days ago, TACA, generally acknowledged by all as a great airline (I love them and their service - their pricing and schedule to CR, not so much) "lost" my bag for 2 days - also i was told they would compensate me $100; I think I'll see the rapture before I see the money  :?

However......

You violated the basic rule for flying Spirit - never do so if you have anything other than a direct, non stop flight - which you don't have flying out of Detroit - only S FL - that said, I am sorry you had problems; I know from experience how frustrating that can be :)

Thanks Scuba.

Unfortunately there are no direct flights to any of my favorite spots from my neck of the woods. I agree (and have experienced) similar issues on many airlines. I take reasonable precautions to reduce the likelihood of issues, but there is much beyond my control.

all in all, a relatively small inconvenience vs. the incredible experiences that I enjoyed in MDE :P

The reason I do not like Spirit is their luggage fees. I did not realize when I paid fees that it was only one way. They stuck it to me at the airport on my return flight.

Actually speaking about Tiger. The company that owns them, also owns some hotels in Asia, along the same model. You literally pay for EVERYTHING in the room. Its a nice hotel, but literally pay to use the TV, pay to use the coffee brewer, the air conditioning, wouldnt surprise me if there was a quarter slot to flush your toilet.
