INTEL ON THE BEETLE BAR
As I've posted on other threads, I got back a week ago from 5 days in Jaco and 4 in San Jose - it was part of a "Boys Fishing Trip" I've taken every Jan for 15+ years. This trip we rented a condo at the Vista Mar, next to the Cocal, owned by a long time Jaco resident - the info I'm going to share about the Beatle Bar is based upon my conversation(s) with this individual, who lives in Jaco and seemed well versed on the "scene". He also gave every appearance of knowing what he was talking about.
(I posted I was going to report on the place, especially the name - as I write this, I'll be the first to say what I'm going to share comes under the heading of who really gives a damn, but I said I'd report back, and I try to keep my word

)
The good news.....everyone who posted about the place was correct - at least to a degree (me included) - when the place was established, the owners at that time, who really built the place up, call the place "The Beetle Bar" - the story was although the place was <wink wink> dedicated to the Beatles, fearing a possible lawsuit over the name, they spelled it "Beetle Bar" and even put a vintage VW Beetle out front, with the bar's name on a sign on the roof to reinforce the name (I've been there many times over the years and you are far more likely to hear latin music vs "She loves you yea yea" or "I Wanna Hold your Hand" but I digress)
The place was named after the singing group, but spelled like the car, and had a Beetle parked out front - they also would tell anyone who asked, that the bar was named for the car

But as Palul Harvey used to say, "Now we know the rest of the story"
Subsequent ownership (my source was unsure if the place had 2 "sets" of owners from the founders, but no matter) figuring the Beatles were getting older <kidding

>, decided to put up a new sign, changing the spelling from Beetle to Beatle, got rid of the vintage VW, and went from there.
My source told me that this group over paid for the place (wow...now that is really a surprise...wonder where <in the USA> they are from) instituted a high cover (was $14 for guys), resulting in protests from the girls who viewed the high cover as a turn off to many and would result in fewer patrons, and raised drink prices.
I guess the girls were correct, b/c the action has switched to the Cocal, at least before midnight - so girls, especially those unable to sell their perhaps overpriced charms, head down to the 'ole BB - but its fewer and fewer - especially in regards to <male> customers.
So while down, the BB is not out, but certainly not like it was in its glory days - when you have a business, highly dependent upon public taste, and your client base can easily vote with their feet, it makes sense to treat them well and not look to squeeze every last dime - a lesson the current owners of the BB seem to be learning the hard way.
Oh....one other point - there is a "For Sale" on the side of the building - seems the place is just waiting for the next person to perhaps prove the old saying that the way to leave (or make) a million in Costa Rica is to start with 2 million
(There might be - like the number of owners - some points of disagreement - but I think my "source" got it mostly right - hey, we are not solving wolrd hunger or world peace here - I remembered correctly the spelling of the place from my first trip to Jaco 10 years ago, and the current spelling is Beatle - so those who said that were correct too

)
