Two of the three I was going to suggest are here...
If you really want a great dining experience, you might want to spend a bit more on your taxi and get outside of the Gulch area...

7 Di Bartolo: Italian in Escazú, overpriced wine list
8. Doris Metropolitan: aged beef is their calling card

are two that were mentioned...both fantastic!

then I would also add in Carpe Diem in Escazu and The Monestary overlooking all of the central valley...WOW!

The Fogo brazil I went to is in the center of San Jose. Great salad bar( with all the suchie you could want) the waiters come arround with 16 different cuts of meat on swords and slice off what ever you want.
One set price of 45.00 us per person . ( but watch out for extras)
They give you a little circle on your table. You turn the green side up for service and the red side up if you need none.

Il Ritorno located in the Casa D'Italia building in San Pedro has my vote as one of the best restaurants in San Jose. Chef Marco does an excellent job. CRT discount.

I haven't been to Carpe Diem since the remodel. It was very pricey, but good.

Le Monastere is mixed bag. The view is awesome...the best aside from Ram Luna. The food can be hit or miss for the prices they charge. I've found that you're better off going to their downstairs grill/bar section that has live music on the weekends.

The best I have ever been to in 20 years of traveling to Costa Rica is
Wellington's Pub in Heredia. I went to Jurgens for several years, the
last time I was there the lamb was ashes and the rest of dinner was
just as bad! As a side note Wellingtons claims to have the largest whiskey
selection in the country.

I agree with the recommendations on Machu Picchu
Two locations. One on paseo colon has more atmosphere,
Good Chica GFE location.

And to the ones that recommend forgo de chao, I disagree. It's good. But so is the one in Dallas, miami, LA, Chicago or 30 other places in the states. You're in costa rica! Don't be such a gringo and expand your horizons.

That is all.

Costa Ricans trade a view for good food

Couple of dining questions for the thread...

How is the place that is kitty corner from the HLH? I can't remember the name otherwise I would do a search here.

Also, has anyone gone to the restaurant by the SL (not Cafe Mundo)? If you are walking down the hill to the HLH from the SL, it's maybe within the first or second block on the SL side. I want to say it was a french restaurant but can't remember the menu and never got the name but was curious from walking passed it several times when it was closed.

Soda Peru?

La Terrasse.

Haven't tried it yet, but if I have time I'll go Friday or Saturday.

Not Soda Peru but just the mention of the name makes me hungry...

The place I am talking about would be northwest of the HLH. It may not be exactly on the opposite (diagonally) corner.

Thanks for getting the name of La Terrasse. I'll do a search but drop your comments if you grab a bite there.

Thanks for the La Terrasse link. After reading the reviews, which were raves for the good, I looked at the pictures attached. The old restaurant "Arte & Gusto" was the other place I was thinking of.

Wasn't Arte & Gusto right by the HLH?

Arte & Gusto moved up the street to the Bolivar B&B. Heard good things about it.

The restaurant that moved into the old Arte/Gusto is Cafe Barcelona. I've dined there twice. The food is solid but nothing stands out. Very strong "South Beach" look.

Not that a good friend is part owner, but Bella Italia in Escazu is fantastic. Located in Paco commercial center. See the reviews:
