Report: Woman Attacked in the Water at Jaco Beach, Animal Unknown

Posted by Marcel Evans on January 26, 2013 in Costa Rica News, Health News

http://news.co.cr/report-woman-attacked ... own/21641/

"This morning we are getting reports of a woman who was attacked in Jaco Beach yesterday, while swimming offshore.

A French couple heard her screaming by a surf lesson tent, they came to her rescue and brought her out of the water onto the beach.

There was a huge gaping hole in her thigh, which revealed her bone and was bleeding heavily.

At this point the emails we are receiving about the story do not reveal whether this was a shark or crocodile attack.

A police truck came onto the beach, and loaded her onto a stretcher, brought her into town, and transferred her to an ambulance."

Special_Ed, you still down there at Hermosa? Hear anything about this?

I knew the crocs sometimes hang around the mouth of the river but I didn't know they'd go out further in the surf. Shark attacks in CR pretty rare, last one I read about June 2011 fatality to a gringo teen surfer as reported in http://www.insidecostarica.com/dailynew ... 062402.htm
but I'd guess shark. Hope she makes it, shock and loss of blood a big problem, no local hospital in Jaco, only a clinic, Quepos Hospital 1 hour.

Hope she'll be ok. I didn't think crocs would go into salt water.

I have had an up close experience with a saltwater alligator. I was checking my gill net one night while fishing for mullet. I was wading in the water and lifted my net was very surprised to be looking into the eyes of an 7 foot gator . It was about 18 inches from my face. Needless to say I dropped the net an ran like hell. I pulled the net in from the shore that night. A couple of years ago our local high school coach had his arm bitten off by a Bull shark . He was training for a triathlon. Swimming in the early morning or late afternoon is not very smart in the ocean. Feeding time!

yes that is true and never wear any shinny jewerly in the water. I did it in aruba and was face to face with a giant Cuda he was attracted to the sunlight from the stainless steel rim of the dive mask. Needless to say, I go an all silicon mask for the next trip!

I never ever wear a watch anymore while diving either, I keep it in pocket in my B/C.

Ive caught large sharks and large cuda in Costa only 300 to 500 yards off the beach.

DGD still here. Haven't heard anything about it. Haven't been to Jaco town since last week. I will ask around.
Yeah knew there was the occasional croc sighting in the lineup from time to time. Personally I would rather see a shark.
A croc would freak me out.
There has been a lot of bait action near shore though the last couple weeks...

Special Ed if you're in Hermosa hows the food a Bowies Point?, used to be Dos Gringos but I am guessing my buddy sold it. Have not made it back to Hermosa since my first CR trip. Really liked that little town. Defiantly way better than staying in Jaco. Never saw a shark or a croc in the lineup there but did get lit up really good by some type of jellyfish.

Seawub,

haven't eaten there yet. Walk by it everyday. Trying to stay outta the restaurants here, they are in my opinion crazy expensive for what they serve. 5k for a hamburger?! I am here for a couple months, so I cook for myself mainly.
I would actually prefer to stay in Jaco, more options for everything. But since I don't have a car I am staying out here.
K*D next door goes there says they have the best prices and decent food. I am sure I will try it eventually. I will let you know.

I'm not sure how far out the crocs tend to go, but they do seem to cruise the area of ocean around a lot of the river mouths in CR, including: the river mouth between Tivives and Valor, the river mouth South of Hermosa, Quepos rivermouth, and Boca Barranca.

I rarely go in past waist deep, not because I was afraid of something, just no fun for me anymore, but this article will make you think twice. An eye opener for me on the surfs in CR. I know minimal odds, just didn't know this risk.

http://www.fearbeneath.com/2008/10/bloo ... osta-rica/

And then read about this teen gringo fatality June 2011 at Playa Grande (Tamarindo). The doc is quoted he didn't think it was a shark bite. Adjust the slider on the photo till you get to the pinpoint of where it happened, look how close he was to the mouth of the river.

As an aside to that story, that's another reason I like Quepos---there's a hospital. This K*D shouldn't have died, the bite wasn't that bad, and no doubt the delay was the real killer. The only other hospital on the coast is in Liberia. So if you get hurt in a crash or in the water or other accident Pacifico, you need luck that they can get you to the little local clinic--if they have one--and can stabilize you for the long bambulance ride to either; or if you're really lucky, the chopper ride to SJ. My understanding is, however, that they only do the med evacs from one of the hospitals or an airport.

Hard to believe that crocs don't normally attack humans. Certainly gators do! I was surprised as I thought crocs were more aggressive than gators. Good Article DGD. Thanks.

From DGD's 1st link:

Quote:
The whole coast, from Puntarenas all the way to Esterillos is full of huge crocodiles during the mating season. Normally, the reptiles do not stray far from the rivers and estuaries of the region, but it is said that the crocodiles that show up in the ocean are the ones who lost a fight over a female crocodile during this season. They leave the rivers and cross through the sea in search for another river, maybe still looking for a mate. Some researchers also blame this new occurrence on development, stating that the natural habitat of the crocs is being destroyed, forcing them to move on to less inhabited regions. Crocodiles do not normally attack humans and this aggressive and frightening behavior is certainly out of the ordinary.

Reminds of the time I went to Honduras about 6 years ago. My lady friend & I went for a morning swim, we were in Puerto Cortes....we both felt something brush by us under the water. She was the one who noticed the dorsal fin. Never moved that fast in my life getting out of the water.
