Put the portable safe cable around something near the bed and put the safe underneath the bed. The most secure place to put something is where no one will look for it.

I never travel with more than $200 US cash and whatever left over foreign currency (usually $100 or less) I have from the previous trip.

I always bring 2 debit cards, one on the Cirrus network and one on the Plus network. I also bring 2 credit cards in case of emergency. These cards are not the main cards I use back home. Very often you will see credit card offers that give you free air miles or some other bonus offer for signing up. These work perfect for backups in foreign countries in case they get compromised.

DGD is absolutely correct in that it is essential that you call the issuing bank and inform them of your travel plans. Banks will often deactivate first and ask questions later.

I like to go the ATM route, and have never contacted any of them - Bank of Montreal, Canada
I personally carry about 1000$ cash with me regardless. Buys me a couple of days at least if I get in a pinch.

Only had one problem, was in Thailand and ran up a WILD bill in a gogo. Had to make 3 withdraws from an ATM back to back. Bank called me about 5 minutes later asking if everything was OK

Which brings me to my next comment. Ive always gave my bank legitimate contacts at all times. Not sure if all banks work on the same idea, but mine has contact numbers I can update for specific countries, and of course an email.
