Hotel Del Rey. I loved it for the first 2 night in country. especially Friday and Sat night.
You gotta have your cab pull up out front have the door man carry your bags. and walk in with eyes wide open.
They knock the rooms but I've got nothing bad to say get, up on the 4th floor . I felt the staff was on top of things F** up the safe combo 2 times. lost the mini fridge key.
Sl is cool but HDR is the mother load. and there's a different feeling when all that you see is yours and all you got to do is hit the up button on the elevator among other things.

Enjoy your trip. I did my 1st trip in july and already logged 3 trips. :D Get your CRT VIP membership. You will save some money if you are staying at any of the venues mentioned by the other posters.

cheers,
Attila

Hello Gents, I've been reading this forum for some weeks now deciding whether or not to make the trip
to CR. Firstly, let me say what an informative supportive and friendly forum this is - well done to the owner,
admin and contributors, it's because of this forum and real sense of community I'm going to pull the trigger and hit CR,
so thanks you to all.

Have been to Panama City a couple of times and Cali,Colombia, both places were good times. Well it's been a year since I've traveled south,
it's almost winter here (Ireland) and the days are short and cold.
I need to migrate south to the sun. I'm thinking of 4 or 5 nights in SJ at the SL, I've read a lot about the HDR and it sounds
no different to the Veneto or Habanos in Panama City (transaction focused) - The SL sounds more 'stable' - Did I say I was 40?, maybe that's why the SL
sounds more appealing. Thinking about a few nights in Jaco also, just for the beach environment and some sunshine to counteract
the SAD (Canadians will know what I'm on about) then back to SJ for a couple of nights... debating a skip down to Panama City also, but
they don't have a Southwest or Ryanair in CR so the flight prices are running at $500... ouch. (Is there a bus service?)

Anyways, I'm aiming for end of this month to arrive in CR. Just a few of questions - I know it's a pain in the ass to get asked
so many of the same questions by newbies, so your answers can be just one word if you have the time. Many Thanks.

HDR - Yes or No? Go there, but look to stay at Sportsmans, Hotel Little Havana, Dunn Inn - I hate the place; the rooms, etc
If yes to HDR, how many nights recommended? Zero - but if you just have to - 1 or 2 - then see my previous suggestion above
SL - Best rooms to get some sleep. Any room not in the entryway or off the bar
SL Bar closing time? ( I like my booze) +/- Midnight - other options a short cab ride away if you are a late night kinda guy
Jaco - Worth it? Yes or No Depends on you - its the closest beach town to San Jose, but the beach is "ehhh" and the town hot and dirty - plus its not cheap for food or lodging - try the Cocal to stay, or the place next to the Beatle Bar - Beatle hotel???
Best place to stay in Jaco (chica friendly of course :-))
Taxi from airport - What/Who to avoid. Avoid the taxi and take the bus for under a buck - picks you up right in front of the airport - then you can take a cab to your hotel for about $3 all in - a taxi will cost you $20 - 30; or look into costa rica interbus - but the bus is the way to go assuming you arrive during daylight hours; plus its easy - the driver will tell you "Directo" to San Jose, then get a cab in front of the bus station
CR Colones, best place to buy. Only place to buy is at the airport bank; never the "Cambios" which are a rip off - go across the street from baggage/customs to the ticket lobby and the bank is there, right nect to the place to buy your exit visa - do that tooo; one less thing to worry about
VIP card - worth it? Y/N But of course; its great; will save you money

Thanks again for a great site.

SL is a great place to stay for a first timer. Puravidatransport.com is also advisable for a first timer (he's a CRT member). He will pick you up at airport and give ya the short tour of the gulch, get your bearings etc...well worth it for a first timer IMO

Also, get the lifetime CRT membership. I made the mistake of just getting the one year membership for my first trip and then got the lifetime card after that expired. You'll be back trust me. I leave tomorrow for my 8th trip in 3 years! :D

Hey Jerry_mac,

It's a little early to be talking about SAD, isn't it? lol. Glad to hear you're booked for later this month. Looks like no one commented on your possibly heading to Panama other than to give you an idea of how long it is by bus. Try taca.com or copaair.com for a short flight to PTY. Not knowing what dates you'd want to go, I searched both using departure Dec. 1 & return Dec. 3. Taca came back at $229 USD, Copa at $553. I've flown both airlines & they're good, although for a short hop like SJO to PTY, you'll just want to get there. You'll likely get a better choice of times with Taca & may find a better fare depending on your dates.

Have a good trip!

PS: also wanted to mention that one trip I had an issue with the outdoor ATMs at INS, it ate my prepaid mastercard. Not a huge deal as I had other options & was able to cancel it immediately & transfer the available funds to a different account, but lost the card. It was a Sunday & my last day, so I couldn't even go in the next day to try to get the card back, but whatever. The ATM in the Del Rey is an "insert & remove" type, so you don't have this problem there.

HDR - Yes or No? (Best to visit. Would be my third choice after SL and HLH)

If yes to HDR, how many nights recommended? (see above)

SL - Best rooms to get some sleep. (The newer ones in the back, or the oldest ones in the front away from the bar in the adjoining building. Or try the hotels around the corner like the Hemingway)

Jaco - Worth it? Yes or No (Never went, but many think it is worth a night or two, some think it fertile hunting grounds, some guys bring a chica with them)

Best place to stay in Jaco (chica friendly of course :-))

Taxi from airport - What/Who to avoid. (Go back upstairs and catch a cab dropping people off. Negotiate $20-25, have the name address of your hotel)

CR Colones, best place to buy. (Take you credit card and passport to the big INS building overlooking the HDR or down the hill from the SL, go inside, go to the bank on the third floor. Safe as houses for both you and your card.)

VIP card - worth it? Y/N (Oh, hell, yes!)

If you want a nice, quiet room at SL and IF they are still available, go with Leon or Puma - all the way in the back of the Mansion Wing. Leon would be my first choice. A little pricier, but if you get your CRT card, and stay four nights, you'll save 20% on your room (10% for less than four nights) through the end of December. CRT card will also save you 10% on food and bar at SL as well.

I forget where, but I noticed Guinness on Tap somewhere on my last trip...but you're probably sick of that.
