This is a discussion that I have had recently with several other members of this board. I think it's time that this is said even if I receive some flack for bringing it up. This board has risen to over 3000 participants which means that there is a lot of content here on a daily basis. Everyone agrees that participation is encouraged and welcomed especially by our newer members. However it seems that a few members have nothing else to do besides post on every subject ,every day, whether they have something constructive to say or not. (and I don't mean the guys who occasionally like to have a funny banter which I enjoy) My point, and that of members I have spoken to,is that now that we are so big, perhaps we should all be respectful of everyone's time here and not post just for our own benefit.

VB perhaps you should ask to become modirator of the board that way you could delete all those useless posts.

VB: Perhaps you could cut and paste (without identifying the author) a "typical" post/remark/comment as to what you consider "nothing useful to say" so that I/we can get a feel for what is a waste of other reader's time. I'm kind of perplexed as to where one draws the line as far as what's "useful" on these boards. Thx.

Delicate balance. Most of the good forums I spend time on develop a community atmosphere, and that's what brings out the good content for many members.

I haven't noticed that much clutter, but I'm new here, so my baseline is different.

One software addition I'd like to see added to most Internet forums is the ability to "sunset" your own posts, where you're just responding conversationally to remarks by a fellow poster. It gets used in place of personal messaging. (Once the impulse to say something is played out, there it is, on record for years!)

There might be a default life of, say, 1-3 days, after which the post disappears itself.

You could opt to give your post a longer life, or not disappear at all, if you really think it helped that particular discussion along.

You could also go back in anytime later, and clean up your posts (though I'm not sure about allowing editing within the text: "I didn't say that." "Yes you did.")

Since I'm new, I wonder if I'll ever find time to discover old threads that were really good ones. That's why I appreciate it when someone brings one of them back to the top for me to enjoy and learn from.

It is getting so that I CANT read all the posts everyday. So, I find myself just skimming for topics that appeal. I also tend to start my board reading looking under "view my posts" . This tends to keep my priorities on the board and be the best use of my daily time on the board. There's always going to be newby posts and repeated commentary by some of our members...but hopefully learning some shortcuts in board use will help relieve frustration by some veteran users. Remember, we were all "newbies" once. All in all...a fair comment and suggestion by SR VBBob.

V.B.

Post a list of offenders. Stop wasting my time by making vague accusations at unidentified members; the above post was IMHO a serious waste of my precious time.
:!

:!

:lol:I understand your frustration, but "T-man's" somewhat patronizing suggestion that veterans should just get over it and let newbies be newbies isn't the answer either. You wanna see a waste of time post? How about Johnny Black's "Here's Johnny" post. Yes, we're all glad he's back, but hey-yo's and props to his pals on the board could have/should have been done privately via PM.

I'm sensitive to this, because it takes longer to read this forum by listening than by reading with the eyes.

Hope I offended only those who deserve it. Again, If I'm an offender, at least have the cojones to call me out on it, publically or privately. Thanks.

As my post count refelects I write here infrequently. I agree with Vegas Bob on some posters over pontification. For me, I am at the point when certain posters ramble on and on about topics that, In my opinion, they know little if nothing about, I just ignore them. I don't want to get into arguments on a message board when I doubt the validity of a post or a poster. There is one major member here that I personally feel has never set foot in Costa Rica, even with all his endless posts claiming the contrary. I could easily be wrong, I have been so before, and will be in the future, but I find it takes away from the site when I feel myself wanting to ask questions about the honesty of a post.

VB, good buddy, I hope YOU don't feel I fall into the camp you describe, but I can see why others might feel that way. I know I tend to over pontification(hence my handle). Though I feel I usually have something useful to say, others may feel different. My point is I don't see how making vague accusations is much help either. I understand you didn't want to embarass anyone by publicly calling them out, but raising the topic this way only gets every one else looking over their shoulders and wondering who everyone else is talking about. El C is right either just tell us outright who you think falls into this category or better yet PM him privately. If anyone gets enough complaints they'll then decide whether to moderate their own posting habits or not.

Personally, I think either course would be unwise. We don't need to start to have acrimonious charges flying back and forth around here. But if I ever get the feeling more people want me to stop posting than those who want me to continue, I'd certainly take that into consideration.

I spend a fair amount of time on this board (READING as well as posting) and I have found the point passed LONG ago where I could read everyone else's posts (let alone read my own  ). I don't bother opening every thread. In fact, I don't even bother going into every section. I only check roll calls when I'm ready to travel and I've never been big on trip reports, which often have the longest posts of all, but I know many others read those over anything else. Also, it helps if those starting a thread pick a descriptive or at least a catchy title. That may prompt me to open it, but if the subject matter revealed in the first few sentences of the first post doesn't catch my interest I usually never refer back to it unless a lot of activity develops on it. I've missed out altogether on some of the more controversial threads (like when the gringas came to visit). Oh well. AND, more to your point, if I'm reading a thread and I come to a poster whose posts I find tedious, I just simply peruse it or skip it altogether. NO PROBLEM. I'm sure many members do the same with mine and I have no problem with that either. The board is just getting bigger. Deal with it.

Prolijo

PS ME, I'm not sure who you're referring to, but I believe I'm the only guy here ever to appear on the BM webcam. So you KNOW I've been down there.

When I started this thread I knew there would be both positive and negative feedback. I have no intentions of turning this into a flame war. Sometimes I feel that I am posting too much.I have posted 500 times in the 19 months that I have been on this board. When I feel that way,I back off a bit so as to give others a chance. My point is merely that perhaps we should all look at our volume of posts here and decide for ourselves if we are using this board for the sharing of information that it was designed for or merely to see our own words in print. I guess my only specific accusation would be myself and I periodically examine what I am writing and why.
