As an update, it took two weeks but AT&T finally sent me the email letting me know my iPhone is available to be unlocked. I went through the restore process and did indeed get the message my iPhone has been unlocked. Basically what happens is AT&T sends your iPhone's IMEI number to Apple which adds the number to their database. After you restore your iPhone it sees the number is on the Apple list and unlocks the phone. About time AT&T!

+ 1. worked for me yesterday also....same process as described above...

if u didnt connect it to itunes with the kolbi sim, try that. supposedly, that allows the phone to recognize that it is unlocked, per Apple

There I was at Kolbi at the airport never thinking that. ATT never mentioned you had to resync. But thanks lot, I have my kolbi sim here I'll try it and post. PS: I wonder if when I put my USA sim back in if I have to resync?

You should not have to sync with the Kolbi sim. Once you did the restore/sync and got the your iPhone is unlocked message you should be good. What error message did you receive when you put the Kolbi in the phone?

I forgot exactly, the Kolbi guy did it for me, something like invalid sim. It was a new sim put it in his phone, no problem. I think I will bring it in and ask them what's up. I never tried it with another carrier, but I will today, t-mobile and see if that works.

Did yours work in CR San Te?

That is the message you get for a phone which is locked. I would definitely try a t-mobile sim. I didn't even try my unlocked phone as I used my iPhone 4 with the Gevey sim. I will be down for the 4th of July and will test the unlocked phone.

Figures after I just jailbroke and unlocked my 3g they would do this. I like the jailbreak but had to run on the ipad 6.15.00 baseband and now my phone sucks down the battery like no tomorrow. I have improved it some buy turning off push notifications, and changing several other settings. I like my phone how it was but was hopeless in the need to unlock. Now I have no choice but to keep the jailbreak, from what I hear you cannot go back after upgrading the baseband to 6.15.00. It sure would of been nice had they done this years ago so I didn't have to make crazy changes to my phone just to unlock it. Been out of contract over a year on it. Waiting for the iphone 5 to come out but part of me is reluctant to go with ATT again.

Here is some good news for you:

Thank you San Te. I called AT&T to unlock my old 4 and within 24 hours I recieved an e-mail with instructions to unlock and it was easy. I brought it with me Memorial Day and bought the chip at SJO. It worked for a little while then started going loco. I turned it off and then on and it worked great. $10 at Kolbi and had internet and enough minutes for a week. My buddy had a rental car and it was nice having the GPS.

Awesome, might have to give that a try. Phone has been running so slow with the jailbreak on it.. example If I load the facebook app, if it does not crash 5 times first, it will take about 3-5 min before its fully loaded and pictures are showing. As long as it works on my trip next month Im happy though.

If u didnt connect it to I-Tunes with the kolbi sim, try that. supposedly, that allows the phone to recognize that it is unlocked, per Apple

You got it. If you're eligible for an ATT unlock because your contract is fulfilled, you can request ATT via email to unlock your out of contract I-Phone. In a few days, you'll get an OK email from ATT with their instructions. But, when you follow their instructions, do it it while using your Kolbi Sim or any other carrier's Sim when you follow their instructions to "back up and restore" on I-Tunes or I-Cloud. ATT doesn't tell you that in their email, they just say make sure you have a sim card in and then back up and restore on I-Tunes and it'll unlock. So, like any ordinary thinker, I used my ATT Sim thinking that would do it and then went to CR. Found out down there it wasn't unlocked. My bad for not trying it with a T-mobile or other Sim before I left. Why ATT doesn't tell you in their unlock email to use a different carrier's SIM is beyond me. Anyway, you were right, use a different than ATT Sim during your unlock attempt, that's the key. Used my Kolbi Sim to do unlock procedure (did it here in the US) and that worked as proved by my later testing using a T-mobile Sim.

I have an IPhone 4s under contract with AT&T. I know they won't unlock it, but there are various vendors on Ebay selling unlock codes for like $30. Will that work?
